The Legal Aid Foundation team is heartbroken by the loss of Justice Melissa Hart. Justice Hart was an unyielding champion of justice for all in Colorado. We will remember her as a kind spirit who never failed to speak up for the most vulnerable.

When someone is facing eviction, having an advocate in their corner can make a critical difference.

Colorado Legal Services’ Denver eviction clinic has already helped more than 1,300 people this year, providing legal assistance to people facing eviction at the courthouse on the day listed on their summons.

For Dashiel Carillo, rebuilding her life has always been about more than herself. It’s about the future she wants for her children.

Dashiel had worked hard to move forward, regaining custody of her children, finding steady work, and purchasing a home. But a criminal record from her past remained a barrier to what she hoped to build next: becoming a real estate agent so she could work from home and support her family.

With support from Colorado Legal Services and pro bono volunteer Deb Kalb, Dashiel successfully had her record sealed. Now, she’s looking ahead to what comes next.

Another great lunch with our friends at Colorado Legal Services!

Today, we were joined by attorneys Kate Taylor and Jocelyn Jenks for a conversation about the challenges their clients are facing and the ways legal aid can help.

We talked about everything from eviction and housing instability to the lasting impact of debt reporting, which can create yet another barrier for people trying to access subsidized housing.

We also talked about how the Legal Aid Foundation and Colorado Legal Services can work together to bring greater attention to the issues attorneys are seeing every day, connect with people and organizations who may be able to help, and create opportunities for clients who want to share their experiences to have their voices heard.

These lunches continue to be a valuable chance for our team to learn directly from the people doing the work and think together about how we can help build greater understanding and support for civil legal aid across Colorado.

Earlier this year, we shared Abigail Colón’s story and the years-long barriers she faced because she didn’t have a birth certificate.
