Legal Aid Foundation of Colorado

Legal Aid Foundation of Colorado www.legalaidfoundation.org Contributions to the Foundation are a great investment.

The Legal Aid Foundation promotes equal access to justice by raising funds to provide free civil legal services for low-income Coloradans with nowhere else to turn. The Foundation’s purpose is to raise money to help meet the critical civil legal needs of low-income families and individuals in Colorado. The money raised is given to Colorado Legal Services (CLS), which provides free civil legal assi

stance to those who need it most, including senior citizens, people with physical and mental disabilities, and victims of domestic violence. Unfortunately, CLS is unable to meet the needs of at least half of all those in Colorado who seek legal help, and studies indicate that only a fraction of those who need legal assistance actually seek it. Its value appreciates each time a family maintains or achieves self-sufficiency because legal aid was available in their moment of need.

The Legal Aid Foundation’s Law Firm Campaign supports the critical work of Colorado Legal Services, helping ensure low-income Coloradans can access legal help when they need it most.

Support from Colorado law firms helps families fight for the safety and well-being of their children when critical medical support is denied. Civil legal aid makes it possible for families to advocate for the care and protections they deserve.

Many Colorado law firms have already joined this year’s Campaign in support of access to justice. Has your firm?

We’re proud to see our partners highlighted nationally: Elisa “Emo” Overall, Executive Director of the Colorado Access to Justice Commission, and Casey Sherman, Supervising Attorney of the ID Unit at Colorado Legal Services were both recently featured in episodes of the Legal Services Corporation’s Talk Justice podcast.

In her episode, Emo shares insights from a 22-stop listening tour that gathered input from communities and justice system stakeholders across Colorado, helping shape a clearer picture of civil legal needs and barriers. Casey’s episode explores Abigail Colón’s legal battle to gain recognition of her identity from the state, having been denied a birth certificate and thereby access to employment, health insurance, legal marriage, and more.

Both episodes offer insight into the real experiences of Coloradans navigating the justice system, and highlight how the crucial work of our partners like the Access to Justice Commission and Colorado Legal Services can truly change lives.

Access to justice matters and Colorado is one step closer to creating a new way to support civil legal aid statewide.

The Equal Justice License Plate bill has advanced, bringing us closer to a specialty plate that would help generate ongoing funding for legal aid organizations serving low-income Coloradans. These services help people facing eviction, domestic violence, consumer fraud, family law issues, and other life-changing civil legal problems.

This effort reflects the legal community working together to expand access to justice across Colorado, and we’re grateful to everyone helping move this initiative forward. Read more here: https://www.legalaidfoundation.org/equal-justice-license-plate-bill-advances/

Music, community, and a shared commitment to justice: this year’s Pro Bono Bash delivered on all fronts.

Hosted by the Boulder County Bar Association and the Legal Aid Foundation, the event was more than a great night out. The funds raised help Colorado Legal Services provide free civil legal services for Coloradans navigating some of life’s most difficult challenges.

Thank you to Laura Ruth, Bay Shogrin, Jodi Martin, Rachel Kunath, Matt Baca, and everyone who helped to make this year’s Pro Bono Bash a night to remember.

At this year’s Pro Bono Bash, the dance floor wasn’t the only place where people were stepping up. Earlier this month, the Boulder County Bar Association and the Legal Aid Foundation hosted the annual Pro Bono Bash at The St. Vrain in Longmont. The evening brought together members of the legal c...

The need for civil legal aid has never been higher, and neither have the stakes. Legal aid funding is in constant peril, from Congressional calls for deep cuts to threats of complete elimination from the White House.

But even without these recent threats, legal aid has been vastly under-resources for decades. In Colorado and nationwide, legal services organizations must turn away half of eligible applicants—not because they don’t have a case, but simply due to lack of resources.

Every year, millions of Americans face urgent civil legal problems through no fault of their own. That means veterans facing homelessness, families torn apart by violence, farmers rebuilding after disaster, and seniors scammed out of their savings.

And Colorado is stepping up to change this.

Last month, leaders from Colorado’s legal community joined Legal Aid Foundation Executive Director Jordan Bates-Rogers in Washington D.C. to advocate for federal legal aid funding at this critical moment.

Thank you to
For standing up for access to justice for ALL.

When legal aid is at risk, Colorado takes action.

Read more here:

At a time when the need for civil legal aid has never been greater, the White House has again called for the elimination of legal aid funding. The last federal funding bill for the Legal Services Corporation cut grants by 3.6%. This small cut represents a rejection of calls for ending funding and st...
