To paraphrase H.G. Wells: Every time we see hundreds of bicycles parked outside a high school, we no longer despair for the future of the human race.

To many Dutch people, it barely registers. But this scene represents something profound: freedom and autonomy for young people; without the stress, cost, or danger that comes with needing a driver’s license.

In the Netherlands, teenagers don’t have to wait until adulthood to move independently through their city. Safe cycling networks give them access to school, sport, work, and friends from an early age.

And they take advantage of it. Nationally, 60% of all teenage trips are by bike, making them among the biggest beneficiaries of decades of investment in protected infrastructure and calmed streets.

This is what mobility freedom looks like. 🚲

With the June service changes, RTD will introduce new connections, increased bus and train frequencies, and improved schedules. The adjustments will support customers during the next phase of the agency’s multi-year Downtown Rail Reconstruction Project starting June 7. The service enhancements represent a significant investment in better, more accessible public transportation for the region.

FYI: The Denver Climate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency's eBike Rebates are back! The next e-bike rebate release will be on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 11:00 A.M.

In 2026, there will be three rebate release dates:
Tuesday, May 19
Tuesday, July 7
Tuesday, September 8

Colfax Marathon to cause temporary detours, delays for RTD bus, light rail service

Scheduled connections could be affected; customers should allow extra travel time

DENVER (May 11, 2026) –– Some Regional Transportation District (RTD) bus and train services will experience detours from 5:30 a.m. until approximately noon on Sunday, May 17, due to the Colfax Marathon.

This year marks the 20th anniversary for the marathon, which will run through Denver and Lakewood. Race events take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 16-17, and will temporarily affect RTD light rail and bus routes that operate along and across Colfax Avenue.

D, H and L light rail (Sunday, May 17, only):

D and H lines will not serve Colfax at Auraria Station through the Downtown Loop stations on Stout and California streets
D and H lines will continue to serve 10th-Osage Station, and will reroute to serve Auraria West Station, Empower Field at Mile High Station, Ball Arena-Elitch Gardens Station and Union Station
The L Line will not be in service during the event, and customers are encouraged to use bus Route 43 as an alternative
No impacts to RTD rail service are expected to occur on Saturday, May 16

Customers should expect delays on D, E, H and W lines during the event due to increased rail traffic at Union Station. Plan for extra travel time to/from Downtown


Bus routes:

May 16 only: routes 20 and 24 will have a minor detour around the event, 9 a.m.-noon during the Colfax 5K race
May 17 only: the following bus routes will be temporarily detoured in many areas, and will be allowed to cross the marathon route when possible: 0, 1, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, 15L, 16, 19, 20, 24, 28, 30, 38, 40, 43, 44, 48, 51, 52, 76, 83L, ART, FREE

Customers using routes affected by the marathon should expect delays and detours, which may affect scheduled connecting bus and rail trips. Check the RTD website before traveling for schedules and to plan a trip. For assistance, call Customer Care, 303.299.6000, 6 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturdays/ Sundays/holidays

For the May 17 race day, RTD is accepting Colfax Marathon 2026 race bibs, 6 a.m.-2 p.m. as valid fare payment on the following rail lines and bus routes:

Rail lines: W Line
Bus routes: 15, 15L, 16
