The be well Health and Wellness Initiative is honored to have hosted the Opportunity Triangle Walk Audit + Walkability Institute, a powerful two-day experience bringing together residents, policy leaders, public health professionals, and community partners.

Exploring neighborhoods in Northwest Aurora and Central Park gave us a deeper, more grounded sense of community. Walking side by side allowed us to experience what residents navigate every day—revealing barriers to physical activity and access to public transportation in ways we simply don’t see from behind the wheel.

Together, we were able to visualize how zip code plays a critical role in health outcomes. We saw the contrast between accessible sidewalks and well-managed, high-traffic areas—and spaces that felt unsafe, unkempt, or lacking investment in infrastructure.

These shared observations help inform where policies, systems, and critical investments are needed to advance equity, accessibility, and community well-being.

💬 What have you noticed about walkability and access in your community? We’d love to hear your perspective.

We were honored to host the Opportunity Triangle Walk Audit + Walkability Institute, a powerful two-day experience bringing together residents, policy leaders, public health professionals, and community partners.
During the Walkability Institute, we explored parts of Montbello, creating space to gather meaningful feedback—especially from residents who use walkers and people with varying abilities. Their insights helped highlight real, everyday experiences navigating the community.

This walk gave us an important opportunity to see firsthand and discuss where policies, systems, and critical investments are needed to promote equity, accessibility, and inclusion across the Montbello area.

At Be Well, we believe that healthy communities are built with the people who live in them—and this experience brought that belief to life.

💬 What does walkability and accessibility look like in your community? We’d love to hear your thoughts!

We’re grateful to have hosted the Opportunity Triangle Walk Audit + Walkability Institute—a powerful two-day experience bringing together residents, policy leaders, public health professionals, and community partners.

Together, we explored how the built environment shapes community health across northeast Denver and Aurora, lifting up the voices and lived experiences of those who know these neighborhoods best.

A special thank you to the FreshLo Community Hub for hosting the Walkability Institute and creating space for meaningful connection, learning, and action.
At Be Well, we believe that healthy communities are built with the people who live in them—and this gathering was a true reflection of that mission in motion.

💬 What does walkability and healthy design mean to you? We’d love to hear your thoughts!

The be well Health and Wellness Initiative would like to say thank you to our incredible partners: Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment, Bluff Lake Nature Center, FreshLo Community Hub, and ABC Community Hub. And to every participant who showed up, walked with us, and shared your voice — thank you.

Residents, policy leaders, community partners, city planners, educators, students, and walkability expert Mark Fenton came together to identify barriers, highlight strengths, and imagine what safer, more connected neighborhoods can look like.

In May, our vision for the Opportunity Triangle came to life.
In collaboration with our community partners, the be well Health Wellness Initiative hosted a statewide Walkability Institute at Bluff Lake Nature Center, followed by two Opportunity Triangle Walk Audits in Montbello and NW Aurora. This gave leaders from across the state a real-world taste of what it takes to conduct a walk audit.

The content from walkability expert Mark Fenton and the hands-on exercises were great, and having local policymakers, city planners, nonprofit leaders, educators, public health administrators, professors, community members, residents, and youth all in the same space made the experience even better.
This work is rooted in community, and moments like these remind us why it matters.

Thank you to our incredible partners: Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment, Bluff Lake Nature Center, FreshLo Community Hub, and ABC Community Hub. And to every participant who showed up, walked with us, and shared your voice — thank you.

Stay tuned for more to come.
