Refugees are more than a label.

Behind the word refugee is a person with a story, knowledge, relationships, a family, skills, dreams, traditions, and hopes for the future… and a life that began long before displacement.

Starting again in a new country means much more than finding a new home. It can mean learning a new language, understanding unfamiliar systems, finding work, rebuilding community, and creating a sense of belonging.

A welcoming community can make that journey a little easier.

At Refugees + Immigrants United, we believe that inclusion begins when we see the person before the label.

🌎❤️ Our stories matter. Our identities matter. Belonging matters.

We’re proud to see our Refugees + Immigrants United Founding Executive Director, Nga Vương-Sandoval, featured in Colorado Public Radio’s “Dream Big: Refugees, Immigrants and Adoptees in Colorado Share Their Experiences" with All Things Considered Senior Host Nathan Fernando-Frescas.

A Vietnamese refugee who came to the U.S. as a child, Nga reflects on identity, heritage, displacement, belonging and the journey of embracing the parts of ourselves we once felt we had to minimize.

Her message is powerful: our stories aren’t something to hide. They can be our sources of strength.

This conversation, born from a question from Nga to Nathan about why he changed his name, brings together four people with very different journeys and one shared question: How do we find belonging when life changes, uproots us, or leaves pieces of our story unanswered?

🎧 Tune in, listen deeply, and share this conversation. You may hear a piece of your own story or better understand someone else’s.

Four Coloradans born in Vietnam, El Salvador, India and Texas came together to talk about heritage, identity, community and the pressures they’ve faced.
