EDABC will be at the DEN Procurement Tradeshow tomorrow!

Procurement is one of the ways we move opportunity into the hands of ready businesses.

We’ll be on-site connecting with DEN officials, major contractors, and businesses to better understand where contracts are moving and where there are opportunities for Black-owned businesses to compete and capture dollars.

A business can have a strong product, loyal customers, and an experienced owner—and still face barriers that have little to do with the quality of the business itself.

That’s why Black business growth is an economic development issue.

When we talk about strengthening Black businesses, we’re also talking about who has access to the systems that drive economic growth:

Who gets the contract?
Who gets the loan?
Who has access to commercial opportunities?
Who is connected to decision-makers?
Who has a pathway into emerging industries?

Black Business Month gives us a reason to celebrate the businesses already contributing to our communities. It should also push us to examine the economic systems surrounding them.

Because if we want Black businesses to thrive, we have to look beyond the business—and at the ecosystem around it....

Black business ownership did not begin with a trend, a hashtag, or a designated month.

For generations, Black entrepreneurs have built businesses, created jobs, established institutions, developed commercial districts, and created economic opportunity—even when the systems around them were not designed to make that easy.

From thriving Black business districts to today’s technology companies, manufacturers, restaurants, retailers, and innovative startups, Black entrepreneurs have consistently demonstrated the capacity to create and sustain economic value.

The history matters because it changes the question.

The question isn’t whether Black businesses can contribute to a thriving economy.

They already have.

The question is what happens when an economy removes the barriers that limit their ability to participate fully.

What could be created with greater access to capital?

What could happen with more equitable access to contracts?

What happens when Black businesses have access to the networks, markets, talent, and decision-makers that influence regional economic growth?

Those aren’t just questions about individual businesses.

They’re questions about the kind of economy we’re building....

Check out this latest opinion article from The Colorado Sun by Theo E.J. Wilson.

The piece reflects on Melat Kiros’ rise in Colorado politics following her Democratic primary victory and examines the broader conversation surrounding Democratic Socialist candidates, generational shifts in voter priorities, and the criticism Kiros has faced in recent weeks.

Wilson also references EDABC’s Congressional Forum, recalling the debate between Melat Kiros and Regent Wanda James and describing it as a thoughtful policy discussion that respected voters’ intelligence and focused on the issues impacting Coloradans.
