The Black Alumni Affinity Network invites DU alumni to gather over drinks and appetizers.

It's hard to believe that we haven't gathered in person since the pandemic, but it's finally time for us to step out in style. Hosted at NOLA, a Black-owned restaurant and bar renowned for its New Orleans cuisine, our mission this Spring is to build bridges between Black-identifying alumni with graduating seniors. Come connect with us!

When: Thursday, May 9th, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Where: NOLA Voodoo Tavern & Perks

BAA is looking for Black-identifying alumni representatives to welcome Black graduating students into the alumni community!

Our first End of Year Celebration, hosted by DU's Black Community Initiatives (BCI), is a graduation ceremony celebrating the polylith of Black and African identifying graduating students at DU. Open to family members, faculty, staff, students, and alumni, graduating students will be bestowed a special gift from the Black Alumni Affinity Network (BAA).

When: Thursday, May 30th, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Don't miss this great event on Monday 11/2! Learn what DU is undertaking to increase the number of underrepresented students in STEM and learn what is and isn't working so far.

The next Pathways to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) series will be on Monday, November 2 from 5-6pm and be moderated by Associate Dean of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Nic Ormes. Building a Diverse, Equitable and Inclusive STEM Community will tackle issues regarding DEI in STEM. Register at http://rsvp.du.edu/d/b7qxbn.

STEM faces particular challenges that have been made more acute by the COVID-19 crisis widening both gender and racial inequities. While the numbers of minorities and women are growing, the workforce in STEM-related fields remains predominantly white (89 percent) and male (72 percent). Under current conditions, proportional representation of all groups in the STEM workforce would take another 60-75 years to lock in. Researchers started defining a theory of “culturally relevant education,” an approach that leverages the distinctive, different backgrounds that non-white, non-male students bring to the classroom. Join us for a discussion on the initiatives DU is undertaking to increase the number of underrepresented students in STEM and learn what is and isn't working so far.
