What is The United Methodist Church's view of Halloween?

In The UMC, the focus is really on All Saints Day, November 1. "Halloween" refers to the evening of Saints--the evening before All Saints Day. This celebration in the church accents our understanding of holiness in this life and our hope for resurrection in the age to come.

For United Methodists, this is not a time of fright and darkness, but is rather a chance to reflect on beautiful lives of faith we've witnessed. As such, many local churches offer safe alternatives to traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating. Others focus more on giving than receiving. Collecting for UNICEF or giving Fair Trade chocolate are ideas for using the occasion to "treat" or give to others.

What makes you think of God's mercy?

Frederick Faber looked at the expanse of the sea and saw a reminder of God's mercy and justice. He recorded his thoughts in "There's a Wideness in God's Mercy", number 121 in The United Methodist Hymnal.

The hymn notes that while God has ultimate sovereignty, God exercises power in grace, mercy, and kindness.
