Year 23 of taking students to Japan in my Youth in Action program. My dream to help build generations of youth who are willing to see the world, to learn about the world, to learn, understand and accept other cultures is becoming increasing more important. A month away from home can be a long time for a teenager, but our group is solid and always there to lend a hand, a ear and an open heart as each member faces the challenges of living with host families, riding transportation on their own and communicating in a mixture of Japanese and English. I love my work and I love my students.

YIA 2024! After nine months of weekly Japanese classes and our spring fundraising dinner, this splendid group of nine Denver teens will spend the next month in Japan. We arrived on Tuesday, and today we spent most of the day at the Narita San Temple complex, ending with a delicious meal that included fresh local sashimi and grilled squid. Everyone is excited to meet their Tsuruoka host families tomorrow!!

Youth in Action is a nonprofit that helps Denver area teenagers become hard-working, responsible leaders. YIA includes Japanese language and cultural study, community service and travel.

Hiroshima. Per the YIA tradition we brought our 1000 cranes we folded in Colorado to place at the Children’s Peace Memorial in Hiroshima’s Heiwa Koen (peace park) then a somber visit to the Peace Museum, a place we all recommend everyone should see during their lifetime if possible.
