Thank you to the Argosy Foundation for an evening of connection and appreciation, bringing partners together in Boulder, Colorado.

It was a joy to be in the room with so many organizations doing powerful work across Colorado and beyond, sharing good food, great conversation, and a chance to pause and celebrate community. Spaces like this remind us that we’re part of something bigger, and that the relationships behind the work matter just as much as the work itself.

We’re grateful to Argosy for creating the space to gather and especially thankful that in uncertain times, they’ve continued to show up for their partners.

The Power of Partnership in Uncertain Times

In his annual message, COCO CEO Jonathan Bruno reflects on a year marked by uncertainty, and the partnerships that continue to move communities forward. From wildfire resilience and watershed restoration to community capacity-building and innovation, one lesson remains clear: meaningful progress happens when people work together.

As we look ahead, we're grateful for the partners, practitioners, Tribes, communities, funders, and supporters helping build healthier ecosystems and thriving communities. What gives us hope is bigger than just the work itself, it's the people behind it.

Native-led nonprofits are strengthening communities, protecting cultural knowledge, stewarding land, and advancing long-term resilience every day. This Native Nonprofit Day, we’re honored to recognize some of the organizations we’ve had the privilege to learn from and work alongside:

• Tribal EcoRestoration Alliance
• Dine Ba'adeiti
• Native Workforce Partners
• FireGeneration

Their work reflects the power of community-rooted leadership, cultural stewardship, and locally driven solutions. As we recognize Native Nonprofit Day today, May 21, we encourage our community to learn about, uplift, and support Native-led organizations year-round.

The COCO team is excited to be attending Confluence 2026, the biennial gathering hosted by the Western Collaborative Conservation Network focused on strengthening the future of collaborative conservation.

This year’s theme, “The Future of Collaboration: The Power of Working Across Divides,” speaks directly to the importance of building relationships, sharing knowledge, and working together to address the complex, landscape-scale challenges facing our communities and natural spaces.

We’re proud to be learning alongside collaborative conservation professionals, researchers, students, and emerging leaders from across the West as we continue growing our skills, partnerships, and impact. Looking forward to meaningful conversations, new ideas, and bringing valuable insights back to our work at COCO.

Over the past few months, Action, Implementaiton, and Mitigation (AIM) grantee, the El Dorado–Amador Prescribed Burn Association (EAPBA), supported by University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC/ANR) and partners have coordinated:
🔥 3 prep days
🔥 4 pile burn events
🔥 6 broadcast burn events

Working alongside partners including the American River Conservancy, Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians, and Garden Valley Fire Protection District, these trainings and burn events are helping build local capacity for prescribed fire and strengthen regional collaboration.

One milestone this season was coordinating multiple burn days in the Georgetown Nature Area in California, the first prescribed burn site accessible to the public and used by Georgetown Elementary School. Another meaningful outcome: growing collaboration with local fire departments and crews from the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians.

As UC/ANR EAPBA AIM Award period comes to a close, this work reflects what’s possible through partnership, stewardship, and shared learning.

May is Wildfire Awareness Month!

Living with wildfire is part of our reality. Many of the COCO team live in Colorado, but readiness is essential nationwide. In our home state, nearly half of Coloradans live in areas at risk of wildfire, and this year’s drought, low snowpack, and rising temperatures are increasing that risk significantly across the state.

The good news: mitigation works. Small, practical actions can make a real difference in protecting homes, communities, and lives.

This month, take time to:
• Clear leaves and debris from roofs and gutters
• Create defensible space around your home
• Prepare a go-bag and evacuation plan
• Sign up for local emergency alerts
• Talk with neighbors and your community about preparedness

Wildfire readiness is more than response. It’s about year-round resilience, shared responsibility, and proactive care for the places we call home.

Learn more about how to Live Wildfire Ready at https://csfs.colostate.edu/live-wildfire-ready/ and reach out to COCO if you're not in Colorado and seeking local resources.

May is a time to uplift and support Native-led nonprofits making a lasting impact in communities nationwide. But remember that Native voices and Indigenous-led work deserve visibility, investment, and support year-round.

As we approach Native Nonprofit Day on May 21, we’re honored to recognize organizations leading with cultural knowledge, community care, and locally driven solutions. These include our partners, Tribal EcoRestoration Alliance, Dine Ba'adeiti, Native Workforce Partners, and FireGeneration. And we look forward to sharing more!

We encourage everyone to take time to learn about, uplift, and support Native-led nonprofits in ways big or small. Learn more and give at www.givenative.org
