A group of people were traveling in a boat. One of them took a drill and began to drill a hole beneath himself.

His companions said to him: "Why are you doing this?" Replied the man: "What concern is it of yours? Am I not drilling under my own place?"

Said they to him: "But you will flood the boat for us all!" (Quoted in Midrash Rabbah, Vayikra 4:6).

Good deeds, like light bulbs, need electricity.

Good deeds, like limbs of a living body, need life.

Good deeds, like a human being, require a mind and a heart.

A good deed has to connect you to your source above. If it is connected, it glows with life.

Gems That Shine
Sivan 27, 5775 · June 14, 2015
Based on letters and talks of the Rebbe, Rabbi M. M. Schneerson

Every good deed is a precious gem. But even the most brilliant diamond can be caked mud. Rather than shine, it darkens—even obscures—the beauty of the one it is meant to adorn.

When you do something good, forget about the status it may get you, forget about how good it makes you feel, forget about how amazing you are for overcoming every challenge to get this done.

Forget about any other motive in the world other than fulfilling the purpose for which your Creator put you here.

Let your gems shine.

Torat Menachem, vol. 34, Likutei Sichot, vol. 4, Parshat Korach.

I asked a question how do you get close to G-d on another post the following is a response to that post from a Jewish perspective.

I believe that the answer provided by Joe was an inclusive response of the different facets of our relationship with Hashem. I briefly explain each of them.

Fasting: Is an act of repentance

Prayer: Our Perspective, The service of the heart. It is our confession to an infinite G-d that we need His intervention, His insight, His assistance. Prayer is to the soul what food is to the body. It is the way to get the energy the soul needs to move through the day and the events within it. It is where the divine in man draws to the divine above, much like a flame flickers upwards to its supernal source.

Torah: The word of G-d. Hashem's perspective, His wisdom, The book of life. Instructions on how to relate to our creator and His creation. It's the agreement between G-d and Man, if we choose to enter into it. We gain knowledge of His perspective of His wisdom by studying the Torah.

Halacha: Our walk, it is through our walk that we learn to understand the knowledge given in the Torah. As a Jew we do to understand. We don't have to understand before we do. Hashem said it so we do it. It is through the walk that we get closer to Hashem by obedience to His commandments. His expressions of love, 613 ways to access an infinite G-d.

All of the above are part of our relationship with G-d but I would conclude the way to get closer to Him to draw near to Him is through keeping his commandments, as explained in the letter Aleph.
