Our Public Lands

Our Public Lands A project of the National Wildlife Federation. Safeguarding public lands for fish & wildlife | For people to recreate & reconnect | For future generations.

https://linktr.ee/our_public_lands America's public lands--our national forests, parks, wildlife refuges, monuments, wilderness areas, Bureau of Land Management land and rangelands--are a uniquely American legacy. In all, these lands cover over 650 million acres - or almost 30% of the nation! Public lands provide habitat for more than 600 sensitive or threatened fish, wildlife and plant species. They also provide a place for sportsmen and other outdoor enthusiasts to recreate.

There’s still time to tell oil and gas companies to stay out of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge! 🚫

Tell them not to bid on drilling leases during Friday’s sale.

The Arctic is for wildlife and people, not oil rigs. 🐻‍❄️🫎🌲

Signed into law in 1934, the annual Duck Stamp Program features the hand-drawn artwork of adults and youth to raise money for conservation. Since its inception, the program has raised over $1.3 billion to conserve over 6 million acres of habitat, often in wildlife refuges.

For this week’s installment of Finding Refuge we’re collaborating with and to help get the word out. Artists may submit their entry beginning on June 1. See for more info and see the link in bio to read about our very own Tessa Nguyen who created this video.

The 19-million acre Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is considered the “crown jewel” of wildlife refuges, but it is now under threat from oil and gas development. This home to polar bears, caribou, and musk ox is no place for drilling. 🚫

Tell oil and gas companies to boycott the lease sale on June 5.

The Kisatchie National Forest provides habitat for deer, turkey and many other wildlife species. It offers up abundant opportunities for hunting. And it serves as an economic engine for 7 parishes.

Selling off public lands is not the answer!

Alaska lands at risk!! 🫎
Last week, the administration transferred 1.4 million acres of federal land to the state of Alaska so the lands could be used for mining and other extractive purposes.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said it is part of the administration’s plan to boost resource production in the state. That development will likely impact numerous species of wildlife that depend on these lands for their survival.

Steve Pearce of New Mexico was confirmed by the U.S. Senate to be the director of the Bureau of Land Management. The agency stewards more than 245 million acres of public land. “Millions of Americans depend on BLM lands for their livelihoods, recreation, and cultural practices. These lands must be available and accessible so all people can enjoy them now and for generations to come,” said David Willms, associate vice president of public lands at NWF.

Ted Turner was a conservation champion, outdoorsman, and philanthropist who worked to restore American bison and other vulnerable wildlife. He also inspired generations of environmentalists to get outdoors, connect with nature, and make a difference to protect it. Turner, who passed away this week, received the National Wildlife Federation’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021 for his work to restore habitat and recover wildlife.

Healthy watersheds buffer communities from drought and wildfire, ensure safe drinking water supplies, and encourage biodiversity. But most riverscapes in the West are a tiny fraction of their former footprint, leaving wildlife and communities more vulnerable to changes in climate.
