LAST MONTH: Dr. Jeff Moses, in collaboration with Dr. Jaime Corté, Chief of Surgery at Hospital Nacional de Niños, led Smiles International Foundation to Costa Rica.

This was the Smiles International Foundation’s first mission to Costa Rica to correct cleft lip and palate deformities. Children’s Lifeline International was honored to support this first mission to help the Costa Rican children in need of this type of care!

Francis Fynn-Thompson, MD, is a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon at Boston Children’s Hospital (B*H). Children’s Lifeline International has been partnering with her mission group for many years now, with repeat trips to Ghana typically twice per year.

In February, we supported a mission to return the Hearts and Minds of Ghana team, a B*H initiative, to the National Cardiothoracic Center (NCTC) in Accra, Ghana.

This past February, the Hearts and Minds of Ghana team returned to the National Cardiothoracic Center (NCTC) in Accra, Ghana, for a 10-day training visit. Together with our Ghanaian colleagues, we performed 12 pediatric cardiac surgeries and conducted a comprehensive review of the program.

Because of your support, children in Ghana are receiving life-saving heart surgery closer to home. With continued partnership, we can help this program transition from mission-supported to high-reliability, self-sustaining excellence.

In honor of and as our most recent Ghana: Pediatric Cardiac Mission has concluded, we wanted to share a past report from Ghana.

These pediatric cardiac missions to Ghana are amongst the most important to us and occur twice a year—typically during February and September.

❤️ Here are a few details from the February 2025 mission, UGMC Paediatric Cardiac collaborative project with Hearts and Minds of Ghana / Boston Children’s Hospital:

- The team assisted with five pediatric cardiac surgical cases.
- Ongoing nursing education in the ICU continued with daily teaching sessions and CPR simulations.
- The team shipped an additional heart/lung bypass machine from Boston Children’s Hospital, which the two perfusionists assembled and set up during the week to provide them with a backup machine.
