My hula sistah shared this post about the dire straits in which some--at least eleven--of our long-standing local, unique, found-only-in-Hawai'i restaurants are finding themselves. If you live in or are traveling to Hawai'i, PLEASE EAT LOCAL. Never mind the chains.

The 11 Restaurants are:
1. Helena's Hawaiian Food in Kalihi(!);
2. Rainbow Drive-Inn on Kapahulu(!);
3. Waiahole Poi Factory in Waiahole;
4. Highway Inn in Waipahu;
5. Koa Pancake House;
6. Zippy's(!)
7. Young's Fish Market in Kalihi;
8. Nico's Pier 38 at Fisherman's Wharf:
9. Palace Saimin on King St. in Honolulu;
10. Leonard's Bakery on Kapahulu(!); and
11. Liliha Bakery on Kuakini St. in Kalihi(!).

🌈 Here's a link to the article that lists & talks about all these iconic local eateries found only in Hawai'i and nowhere else: https://sandinmyluggage.com/11-last-standing.../... 🌈 Let's all kokua these amazing hale 'aina and the families that have kept them--and so many of our beloved Hawai'i culinary traditions--alive. Eat local--it's more 'ono! Mahalo!

Hawaii's most authentic restaurants are disappearing while tourists wait in line at Cheesecake Factory down the street. After 30 years watching this happen, I put together the 11 family-run spots that locals are fighting to keep alive.

One has been cooking the same recipes since 1946. Won a James Beard Award. Still uses the same wooden spoons. Tourists drive past it every day to eat at chains and have no idea what they're missing.

Another sits on a harbor where fishing boats unload the daily catch. The fish on your plate was swimming hours ago. No resort kitchen on this island can touch that freshness. But most visitors don't even know this place exists.

The ONE that hits hardest is run by a family who rebuilt their restaurant after returning from wartime internment camps. Three generations later they're still cooking. ONE bad year could end 77 years of history.

These 11 restaurants are the real Hawaii. Eat at chains during your trip and you're helping the wrong side win. Visit even TWO of these and you're keeping someone's family legacy alive. 👇

Office of Hawaiian Affiars (OHA) Mālama Honua Home Improvement/Renovation Program Grant (Mālama Honua) is a new pilot project for income-qualified Native Hawaiian homeowners who are ineligible for traditional loans due to income or credit limitations.

A selected nonprofit partner will provide targeted grants ($10,000–$20,000) to Native Hawaiian homeowners to address critical health and safety repairs so they can remain in their homes. Funds will be prioritized for urgent repairs that address documented hazards, or threats to habitability.

Learn how to apply and other information in an OHA Webinar:
