It's Earth Day 2026, and we at WGEF are here for it! Climate chaos, is, of course, top of mind. Sooo...What does climate justice have to do with gender?

Because women are the food producers, carers of the family, and responsible for collecting water and cooking fuel, climate events impact women and families most. They also face harsh economic impacts from environmental degradation, with women spending more household income on mitigating climate events and disasters.

Click below to find out a few ways that women are disproportionately Impacted by climate chaos.

Extreme weather and climate events are increasing across the world, but they don’t affect everyone equally, women are disproportionately impacted by climate chaos.

Happy Earth Day, friends and supporters!

As populations across the world are constantly on the precipice of war, hunger, displacement, and resource exploitation—and continuously undermining human rights, justice, and international law—it is important to note that 5.4 billion people are ruled by men over the age of 70, suggesting that a generational and gender shift is in order to find new ways forward.

For poor countries, environmental degradation is built on a hierarchy of injustice, greed, and violence. This requires countries to fight imperialism on the aforementioned fronts, and the struggle to pay imposed debt prevents states from providing basic human services to their citizenry and protecting the environment.

This Earth Day, the planet and its people face an existential crisis requiring sustained action, and a monumental effort to push back a capitalist patriarchy seemingly willing to speed up the destruction of the planet and its inhabitants to further a violent and power-driven agenda.

Our call to action is twofold: End oil wars and resource exploitation; and move toward a fair and just green economy based on equality and protection of the natural world. WGEF works to promote the values of gender and environmental justice through sustainable agriculture, leadership development, community dialogues, and a solutions-based agenda.

Today on , women from around the world are mobilizing and organizing calling for human rights, justice, equity, and an end to sexual violence and exploitation; challenging policies that create hunger, poverty, ongoing conflict and raising awareness of climate chaos, mass incarceration and other crisis that disproportionately and negatively impact women around the world. But this comes with great risk as authoritarian governments, increased militarization, and rolling back of women’s rights, create a new (or not so new) perilous paradigm.

Read mire about why March 8th matters at https://wgefund.org/why-march-8th-matters. And let’s celebrate the connection of all women to be empowered with agency and liberty, ensuring our collective voice demanding equality, human security, social justice and peace, is loud and clear. Let a global sisterhood create a call for action on March 8th and every day until all people are able to live with dignity and free from violence.

A Voice Behind The Walls

At WGEF, we see firsthand how inequality, discrimination, and conflict keep women, girls, and families trapped in cycles of violence and poverty. Today, on , we celebrate the women who are inspiring us and driving change.

We’d like to share the story of Aneno Betty. For years, she lived within the prison community as the wife of a prison warden. The injustices she witnessed during that time changed her life forever.

When she participated in a WGEF leadership training at the Gulu Women’s Rights Centre (GWRC), her vision took shape. Betty is now running for elected office, as Counselor of Women’s Prison, to represent and advocate for incarcerated women. She is not contesting for power; she is contesting for change. Every woman, even behind bars, deserves dignity.

On this , support WGEF in our mission to serve women like Aneno Betty with the tools and resources they need to earn a seat at the table and transform their communities. Every amount matters. wgefund.org/donate

✨International Women’s Day 2026
✨Theme: Seated and Protected Shall I Be!
From its inception in 1910 by renowned activist Clara Zetkin, often called the mother of International Women’s Day, this global movement has evolved significantly. In 1977, the United Nations officially recognized March 8 as International Women’s Day, affirming it as a global call for women’s rights and equality.
✨Yet, more than a century later, the promise of equal protection and equal opportunity remains unfulfilled.
Every March 8, we are reminded that women’s human rights have not been fairly or equally protected. Zetkin understood that true change would require a global sisterhood united across borders to challenge inequality in pay, economic participation, social status, and legal rights.
This year, we join the global call: “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.”
✨Why?
Because women worldwide hold only 64 percent of the legal rights that men do.
Because, as stated in Article 7 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law.”
✨And yet, equality before the law remains aspirational for millions of women and girls.
Simply put, women are still not fully protected under the law. Structural barriers rooted in patriarchal systems continue to limit full equality. According to UN Women, if progress continues at its current pace, it could take 286 years to close legal protection gaps.
✨This is not acceptable.
We cannot wait centuries for justice. We owe it to the next generation of girls and women to act with urgency, courage, and conviction.
If I may add my two cents:
✨First, we must encourage girls to pursue diverse and leadership positions across every sector. The days of the status quo when girls were discouraged from dreaming boldly must remain behind us.
✨Second, we must remind our sisters, young and old, that they do not need to wait to be invited to the table. If a seat is not offered, create your own space. Make your voice heard. Claim your visibility. Sit firmly in the chair you bring with you.
✨As the bold and trailblazing Shirley Chisholm once said,
“If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”
On this International Women’s Day 2026, we declare: Seated and protected shall I be.
Happy International Women’s Day 2026!❤🙏

POV: Your work makes a real and lasting difference.

WGEF has 67 woman running for office in 2026:

“Before the training, I never imagined myself standing for office. Today, I am confident to speak, to lead, and to represent my community,” shared one WGEF participant and aspiring councilor.

Another woman leader noted:

“WGEF helped us understand our rights, the laws, and how to engage constructively. Now our voices are no longer silent.”

This moment represents courage, resilience, and a shift in long-standing gender norms that have historically excluded women from leadership and agency. These women are stepping forward to advocate for inclusive policies, justice, and peaceful, accountable governance.
