What better way to wind down after the People's Party? The COPA team took a half-day at the Denver Botanic Gardens, strolling through nature and squeezing in a staff meeting amid beautiful scenery. A perfect reset before diving back into the work.

On Thursday, Governor Polis signed HB26-1276, a bill that strengthens oversight and accountability for immigration detention facilities in Colorado.

I'll be honest; I carried mixed feelings into the signing ceremony. We started this legislative session with three strong bills and ended with one bill that was significantly changed through the process.

But Thursday wasn't about what we lost. It was about celebrating what we won together.

I keep thinking about what would have happened if COPA, CIRC, our coalition partners, and community members hadn't shown up. If people hadn't testified, met with elected officials, shared their stories, and organized week after week, we might not have moved anything forward.
Every step forward matters.

What I'll remember most isn't the bill itself. It's seeing members recognize their own power. It's watching community members walk into the Governor's Residence knowing they helped shape this outcome. It's seeing a member's child look at their parent with pride and awe because of the work they did for their community.

We still have work to do. We haven't reached the Colorado we're fighting for yet. But it was a reminder that progress is built one step at a time and every step forward is worth celebrating.

Onward. ❤️💪🏾💪🏾 - Lamine, Lead Organizer for COPA

Strong communities are built by people willing to respond, organize, and care for one another in real and tangible ways.

This year, COPA is proud to recognize East Colfax Community Collective (EC3) and Housekeys Action Network of Denver (HAND) with the 2026 Organizational People’s Award.

Both organizations have shown what it means to meet urgent needs while continuing to build long-term community leadership and power. Through mutual aid, rapid response organizing, neighborhood support, trainings, and relationship-building, EC3 and HAND continue strengthening communities across Aurora and Denver.

Their work reminds us that collective power is not abstract. It’s built every day through care, courage, trust, and action.

As one of the toughest legislative sessions comes to an end, we're reflecting on what community power looked like this year.

We showed up in co-governance with our champion legislators.
We testified on bills.
We organized Lobby Day.
We showed up alongside powerful coalition partners and directly impacted communities.

Not every outcome was what we hoped for but the question that I keep asking myself is: What if COPA, CIRC, and our partners were not in the room and a part of the process?

Some bills moved forward, while others were stripped down through the process.

However, our presence mattered.

And now, we cannot lose this momentum, especially with elections around the corner.

The legislative session may be ending, but the organizing continues. Now is the time to stay connected, deepen relationships, and keep building community power together.

We are grateful for every member, leader, organizer, coalition partner, and community member who showed up this session. ❤️
