Colorado's semi-arid climate, withdrawal of water for municipal and agricultural uses, and a complex water allocation system all contribute to rivers with very low streamflow -- or no streamflow at all. This strands and exposes fish, damages riparian habitat, and affects the recreational businesses that rely on streamflows. The Colorado Water Trust works within Colorado's water allocation system t

Colorado's rivers need our help—and producers are stepping up.
With the lowest snowpack on record this winter, federal forecasts warn that runoff levels could drop to just 24% of normal this summer. That means iconic waterways like the Colorado River and the Yampa could go completely dry.

9NEWS is covering our work to keep rivers flowing this summer— we're paying farmers and ranchers to temporarily leave their water in the rivers instead of diverting it to their fields. It's a voluntary, short-term solution that protects water rights while keeping rivers alive.

This is what collaborative water stewardship looks like. Give this recent article a read to learn more.

Hi! My name is Sidney, and I am excited to dive into my role as the Development and Engagement Intern for Colorado Water Trust.

Growing up in Colorado, my summers were filled with camping trips and hiking adventures exploring our state’s creeks, rivers, waterfalls, and glacial lakes. As a kid, I loved getting to play in Colorado’s clear waters, but it wasn’t until college, when I became interested in agriculture and environmental justice, that my true passion for protecting waters was nurtured.

This summer, I am honored to help Colorado Water Trust connect with community members and bring new voices to the table, so that we can all be nourished by Colorado rivers; this season and every season.
