Contemplative Outreach of Colorado Our purpose is to share the method of Centering Prayer and its immediate conceptual background.

For 40 years, Contemplative Outreach of Colorado has been devoted to teaching and supporting thousands of people from all walks of life and denominations in their search for inner transformation through Centering Prayer. Contemplative Outreach is a spiritual network of individuals and small faith communities committed to living the contemplative dimension of the Gospel in everyday life through the practice of Centering Prayer. We also encourage the practice of Lectio Divina, particularly its movement into Contemplative Prayer, which a regular and established of Centering Prayer facilitates. We identify with the Christian Contemplative Heritage in which Centering Prayer is rooted. While we are formed by our respective denominations, we are united in our common search for God and the experience of the living Christ through Centering Prayer. We affirm our solidarity with the contemplative dimensions of other religions and sacred traditions, with the needs and rights or the whole human family, and with all creation.

Philosopher, author, and mystic Simone Weil (1909 - 1943) offers us an expansive definition of beauty: beauty is not simply a fleeting moment, but genuine beauty acts as a bridge to the transcendent - pointing us towards something infinite, eternal, and divine beyond our physical reality.

We love seeing our community in-person! One of those ways is attending a prayer day with us. Our half days of prayer consist of 4 Centering Prayer sits, followed by meditative walks, and a short (silent) break. You do not have to participate in every sit.

Our 12-Step Half Days of Prayer include 4 meditative sits (any practice), with meditative walks and a short (silent break), followed by a 1-hour all-programs meeting.

Rick builds on teachings from Karen Armstrong, Richard Rohr, Thomas Keating and others to demonstrate how the fundamental first step on the spiritual journey lies in re-discovering faith in a world full of competing and conflicting beliefs.

In the process, we’ll discover how compassion, forgiveness and inclusion become practices of contemplation and meditation when done through the eyes of faith.

"When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free."

Wendell Berry (1934-2026), The Peace of Wild Things

Might our many societal, cultural and world problems be viewed as a crises of faith?

In this thought-provoking presentation, Rick Klein offers insight into an often unseen dilemma that lies at the heart of many of today’s dualistic sociopolitical issues: The decline of faith and the rise of beliefs.

"As Dame Julian of Norwich, that delightful English mystic declared, we are God's dream, his homiest home," Fr. Pennington continues. "We have too little respect for ourselves, too little esteem for our own importance. God sees things otherwise."

Fr. Basil Pennington, along with Fathers Keating and Meninger, developed the method of Centering Prayer.

In his 1988 book, "Eternal Echoes: Celtic Reflections on Our Yearning to Belong," Irish poet, philosopher, and author John O' Donohue ( describes the heart as a theatre. He uses "theatre" to convey how our heart stages our different desires, acts out our search for connection, and holds a deep, restless energy.

Rather than silencing our yearnings, O' Donohue encourages us to listen to them as the voice of our souls, calling us to live more fully as our truest selves.

What are the longings pinging you today?
