What an honor to have Matene Strikes First sing for us today at a performance for Standley Lake High School. Thank you for all you do for the community. You truly honor the ancestors in your actions!

In honor of , today, we recognize Matene StrikesFirst Jerome, a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa and also has Dakota roots. He is 18 years old and a dual resident of North Dakota and Colorado, spending his summers in his small home town of Trenton ND, located in the heart of the Bakken.

Matene is a youth advocate for social and environmental justice, dedicated to protecting water, land, and air from harm due to human exposure. He is a singer, chicken dancer and traditionalist, choosing to live a drug and alcohol free life. He is currently a freshman at Red Rocks College.

He has been raised in a traditional way and lives by our original instructions & virtues given to us by our ancestors. He has been greatly involved and committed to the movement to protect the water at Standing Rock, as well as standing up against environmental attacks around the world. An environmental youth advocate working through the non-profit organizations, Spirit Horse Nation, Youth Advocate with Honoring Our Mother Earth (H.O.M.E.), a member the national UNITY Council and founder/ Chairman of the 7th Generation Youth Council, he is often asked to speak and sing at youth conference, schools, marches and events.

He believes that the small actions we all make every day can have a lasting impact on our planet. Youth are suing the government, holding city councils to stop fracking, starting recycling programs, urban community gardens, making choices to stop using plastics and thousands of other projects.

"I believe we all must take a part in making the world a better place. I'm committed to a life of social and environmental justice. With understanding, prayer and hard work we can always find a way".

Matene made a song for the social movement at Standing Rock to honor the water protectors called, "Water Is Life". You can check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdyoUryJg_I
