Trauma can shape the way people move through the world long after the harm itself. During Trauma Awareness Month, we recognize the importance of support that centers safety, choice, compassion, and the understanding that healing looks different for everyone.

May has been a busy month here at VFC, but we want to make sure we acknowledge and honor some important awareness months before May concludes. Mental health matters for survivors, advocates, and every person carrying more than others may realize. This month is a reminder that healing, rest, connection, and support are not separate from safety work.

Children living in homes with domestic violence are often navigating far more than what systems are designed to see.

Too often, responses focus on individual incidents instead of the broader pattern of power and control shaping the household. That can lead to survivor parents being blamed for harm they did not cause, while the underlying dynamics of abuse go unaddressed.

In Colorado and beyond, there is growing recognition that better outcomes come from responses that center context, safety, and survivor autonomy. Supporting children means supporting the non-abusive parent and addressing the full scope of what is happening in the home.

Protecting children and supporting survivors are not competing goals. They are deeply connected.
