Highland United Neighbors, Inc. (HUNI) Connecting & supporting the residents and businesses of Denver’s Highland (LoHi) Neighborhood—Official Registered Neighborhood Organization (RNO).

Bounded by I-25, Speer Blvd., Federal Blvd. and 38th Avenue, the Highland neighborhood is home to more than 7,000 households. Comprised of residents, business owners, non-profit entity stakeholders and schools – Highland United Neighbors, Inc. (HUNI) represents the Highland neighborhood as a Registered Neighborhood Organization (RNO) to the City and County of Denver. As volunteers, we meet monthly to discuss and work towards creating a unified voice for our neighborhood community. The HUNI Vision: “Highland United Neighbors, Inc. is a Registered Neighborhood Organization comprised of volunteers from the public, private and business sectors, committed to the mission of the Highland community and dedicated to furthering its goals.

Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) is kicking off its annual LeafDrop program, allowing residents an opportunity to drop off their leaves and pumpkins to have them turned into compost, rather than ending up in the landfill. Compost customers can dispose of their leaves in their green cart - no bagging needed! Sign up for a compost cart today and make fall yard cleanup a breeze.

Here are some other tips:
Refrain from including branches or other materials in your leaf bags
Don’t use twine or staples to secure paper leaf bags, just roll and crimp
Never rake or blow leaves into the streets; they can clog our storm sewer inlets and street sweepers. If you are a current city compost customer, you can put leaves and pumpkins in your compost cart!

Together with Locavore and Sunnyside United Neighbors, Inc we gave two important schools a little extra funding! Keep educating our youths, Denver North High School and CTD+ Denver Montessori . The world needs more critical thinkers, learners, and dreamers. This donation was made possible with our Annual Pig Roast.

Heads up to building owners, property managers, restaurant operators, event organizers, and contractors!

Good news Denver: recycling and composting services are about to be more accessible across the city!

On Sept. 1, Denver’s Universal Recycling and Composting Ordinance, or URCO, goes into effect.

Here’s what it means for Denver starting today:

🏢 Multifamily buildings with 8+ units and licensed food businesses must provide recycling AND composting services to tenants, employees and customers.
🏙️ Non-residential buildings must provide recycling services.
🎉 Permitted events with 350+ daily attendees must offer recycling and composting to attendees, employees and volunteers.
🏗️ Construction and demolition projects must recycle or reuse at least 50% of debris by weight.

If you’re a building owner, property manager, restaurant operator, event organizer, or contractor, now is the time to make sure you’re on track to comply with URCO.

We’re committed to being a partner in that process. Our approach is education-first — which means we’re focused on giving you the tools and support you need to succeed before any fines enter the picture.
