Engineering students from the University of Colorado Boulder got a hands-on look at masonry yesterday at the Basalite Concrete Products block plant!

On Monday, March 9th, we welcomed CU Boulder engineering students for a day of learning about concrete masonry units (CMU) and designing with block. From seeing the manufacturing process up close to discussing real-world applications, it was a great opportunity to connect classroom concepts with the masonry industry in action.

A big thank you to Basalite Concrete Products and Donald Harvey, P.E. for hosting and sharing their expertise. It was a fun, engaging day helping the next generation of engineers discover the possibilities of masonry!

🔦 RMMI Member Spotlight: Donald Harvey

In wildfire-prone Colorado, resilience isn’t optional — it’s essential.

Donald Harvey is leading the charge to build safer, stronger communities through fire-resistant masonry design. As Vice President and Principal at Atkinson-Noland & Associates, regional representative for the Concrete Masonry Checkoff, and adjunct instructor at CU Boulder, Donald blends nearly two decades of expertise with firsthand experience from the Marshall Fire to champion construction that truly stands up to disaster.

After seeing what remained when entire neighborhoods were reduced to ash, one thing was clear: masonry matters.

Now, he’s equipping the next generation of engineers with the tools to design buildings that don’t just meet code — but protect lives.

Last week, Monday Feb 16th, was a great day for hands-on learning and industry connection!

DM Construction visited University of Colorado Boulder to work with 60 undergraduate students in their Construction Materials course — bringing real-world masonry experience straight into the classroom.

With support from Rio Grande Co., Best Block Company, Quikrete, and General Shale, students got an engaging, hands-on demo that showcased the materials, techniques, and teamwork that power our industry.

It was a powerful example of what happens when industry partners come together to share knowledge, spark curiosity, and inspire the next generation of engineers and builders. 👷‍♀️🧱

At RMMI, we love seeing collaboration like this in action — building skills, building connections, and building the future of masonry.
