Senior Support Services - Denver SSS is Denver's only day shelter exclusively for people age 60+. As the need grew, our services expanded.

Senior Support Services (SSS) was established in 1976 when six churches in downtown Denver came together to assist low-income and homeless seniors who were being displaced by downtown redevelopment. In 1979, we began to provide day shelter, coffee, one hot meal per day and case management services to assist seniors in obtaining benefits and finding affordable housing. In 1995, SSS bought a building at 18th Avenue & Emerson Street where the full range of services – one-stop shopping – are provided for hungry and homeless seniors.

Older adults are now the fastest-growing group of people experiencing homelessness in the United States.

Yet we already have a proven model that shows what works. Combining affordable housing with coordinated services has helped reduce veteran homelessness by more than 55% since 2010.

Check out this op-ed in Real Clear Policy by Deborah De Santis, CSH President & CEO, where she outlines how we can apply lessons from the HUD-VASH program to help older adults stay housed, healthy, and connected to the support they need. With nearly one in five people experiencing homelessness age 55 or older, the need for action is growing.

This is an important read for anyone working in housing, healthcare, aging services, or public policy. Homelessness among older adults is not inevitable. We have models that work. The question is whether we will scale them to meet the need.

"People with IDD are almost always financially eligible for housing assistance. Still, there’s already a shortage of more than 110,000 affordable rental units for low-income households in Colorado, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition."

This is such a positive step - we are hopeful that our community will keep moving toward a future where everyone has the resources and support they need to get and STAY housed!

Although this comes as a relief for people who have been waiting years to find supportive housing for family members with intellectual and developmental disabilites, the need far exceeds available spots in Colorado.

Over the last 36 years, the ADA has made a huge difference for those living with disabilities or mobility issues, including older adults - and it all started here in Denver!

As we celebrate 36 years of the Americans with Disabilities Act, we also want to remember that the disability rights movement didn't begin with the ADA. It was built through the courage, persistence, and direct action of disabled activists who demanded equal access and dignity.

In The Sunday Story, NPR's Joseph Shapiro and Colorado Public Radio's Stephanie Wolf explore the history of the disability rights movement—from the 1978 Denver bus protests led by the "Gang of 19," which helped secure accessible public transit, to today's ongoing fight to protect the hard-won right of people with disabilities to live independently.
