Why bringing the aging, babies and caregivers together is important to us?
It takes a village to raise a child.
It takes an interconnected, intergenerational village of ALL AGES to uplift and raise us all.
Growing up, my dad and I were not very close. As an enlisted man in the U.S. Navy, he was not around for most of my early childhood, and I don’t remember him ever telling me ‘I love you’ or comforting me with a warm hug. But our relationship dramatically shifted as soon as we had our son, Aemon, in May 2016. For the first time in my life, I watched his eyes light up with unabashed pride and joy as he smiled and played with his exuberant new grandson.
Sadly, my dad passed away in December 2017. A few days before he passed, I brought Aemon up to his bedroom for one last visit. My dad (who had been resting in bed with his eyes closed for most of the day) suddenly perked up, opened his eyes and reached his frail left hand out to hold Aemon’s right hand. For the next two minutes, my dad and his 1 1/2 year old grandson looked deeply into each other’s eyes silently and lovingly. Through my dad’s weak yet piercing eyes, I could feel him “tell” Aemon: “Don’t worry, I’m going to be ok. Everything is going to be ok. You are a precious child. I’m going to miss you. I love you, Aemon.” And then, just as suddenly, my dad released Aemon’s hand and closed his eyes again to rest.
