We are pleased to announce that a special issue entitled “Children and Childhood in the Holocaust in the Occupied Eastern Territories”, guest-edited by Aiko Hillen together with Yahad’s Albert Hytry in cooperation with the interdisciplinary journal of the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center, Eastern European Holocaust Studies, has finally been published.

Congratulations to CHE Educator, Dr. Mark Thorsen on such a well-deserved honor.

Last week, over 1,300 community members gathered in person and online for ADL Mountain States' 45th Annual Governor's Holocaust Remembrance Program. Featuring remarks from Holocaust survivor Agi Day, the evening also marked a historic first: Governor Polis presented the inaugural Award for Excellence in Holocaust Education to Dr. Mark Thorsen, a Social Studies teacher at Ponderosa High School in Parker, CO.

With 30 years in the classroom, Dr. Thorsen's approach to Holocaust education is anything but traditional. Rather than essays and tests, his students respond to this history through original works: visual art, poetry, narrative writing, 3D design and dramatic scenes. Students then share their creative journeys in café-style conversations, mirroring the way victims maintained their humanity through artistic expression.

"I have always felt that carrying the history of the Holocaust forward is both an obligation and a duty," said Dr. Thorsen. "Teaching and learning about the Holocaust is a cornerstone of empowering the next generation to think critically, act empathetically and inherit a world that is just."

Beyond his own classroom, Dr. Thorsen equips educators across Colorado to do the same, and we are proud to honor him as the first-ever recipient of this award. 🎓
