Red Rocks Tunnel. Photos taken in 1935 and 2019.

The City of Denver purchased the park for $54,133 to preserve it as a public space. In 1928 and contracted renowned Denver architect Burnham Hoyt designed the functional venue layout.
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Works Progress Administration (WPA) provided the workforce. These were agencies set up by FDR to provide jobs for men out of work during the depression. Workers spent five years removing 50,000 cubic feet of dirt and rock using hand tools. Crews used 800 tons of quarried stone and 30,000 pounds of steel to build 70 rows of seats.
The formal dedication took place on June 15, 1941.

Many of you have driven through this tunnel on your way to a concert, as have I. Next time you drive through it, just remember that photo of the men boring a hole through that red rock sandstone
