The classrooms are quieter now.

Materials have been returned to their shelves, celebrations have been shared, and another year of growth has come to a close. Summer offers something many educators rarely receive during the school year: space.

Space to rest. Space to recharge. Space to reflect. Space to learn.

As we celebrate Pride Month, we’re sharing a few books for your own bookshelf - whether they’re waiting on your nightstand, tucked into a beach bag, or accompanying you to a favorite spot by the water.

The summer months remind us that one of the most powerful things we model for children is a commitment to lifelong learning. As guides, we continue growing alongside our students, expanding our understanding of ourselves, one another, and the diverse communities that make up our world.

Let’s reflect, connect, & share.

Finish this sentence:

“This year, my students taught me __________.”

Because somewhere between the lessons, conflict resolution, snack prep, interruptions, breakthroughs, and everyday moments… they were teaching us, too. 🌿

In Montessori, summer is not separate from learning, it’s part of the developmental journey.

For children, summer brings space for curiosity, movement, practical life, rest, connection, and the kind of unhurried discovery that often plants the deepest roots.

For guides, it’s a season to restore. To reflect on the year that was, reconnect with creativity and purpose, and prepare inwardly for the work ahead.

Growth needs rhythm.
So do the adults and children living it every day.

Here’s to a summer of integration, restoration, and becoming.

Culture shapes the way we learn, connect, communicate, and care for one another.

Today, we recognize the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, a reminder that intercultural dialogue is essential to building peaceful, sustainable, and inclusive communities.

In Montessori spaces, this work begins early. Through shared stories, global perspectives, respect for differences, and opportunities for meaningful connection, children learn that diversity is not something to fear, but something to celebrate and learn from.

A peaceful world is built through understanding. And understanding begins with dialogue.

As the school year begins to wind down, there is so much for educators to hold.

In her latest essay from MECR’s May Newsletter, our Executive Director, Candy Proctor, reflects on this season of endings and beginnings: caring for ourselves as we care for children, honoring the weight of this work, and making space for new beginnings along the way.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, her words are a reminder that the prepared environment begins with the prepared adult and that none of us are meant to do this work alone.

May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, a time to honor the stories, cultures, histories, and contributions of AANHPI communities.

May was chosen to recognize two significant historical moments: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the U.S. on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, built largely through the labor of Chinese immigrants.

This year’s theme, “Power in Unity: Strengthening Communities Together,” reminds us of the importance of storytelling, collective strength, and building bridges across communities. 🌏

We’re sharing a collection of books to help bring these voices and stories into your classrooms and homes all month long.

In a Montessori classroom, the Peace Corner is more than a place. It is a practice.

Rooted in Maria Montessori’s time in India, it reflects a deep respect for the child’s inner life and for their need to pause, to process, and to return to themselves.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we honor the quiet power of this space.

Yes, you can fill a Peace Corner with beautiful objects like soft pillows, calming tools, thoughtfully chosen materials. But the most essential elements are never something you can buy.

They are built.

Time for children to move through their feelings without rush.
Grace for the unfolding, for the missteps, for the work it takes.

And Understanding a deep commitment to seeing what the child is experiencing beneath the surface.

The Peace Corner is not about “fixing” emotions.
It is about trusting children to come back to balance with the right support, the right space, and the right adult beside them.

We see you.

We see the seeds you plant, quietly and patiently, trusting in growth you may not yet see. We see the care you pour in, day after day, as you water what matters most. We see the mountains you move - plans rewritten, needs anticipated, moments held with intention.

And we see the fierce protection of the environments you create… spaces where children feel safe, capable, and known.

Whether you guide children in a Montessori classroom or in any space where young lives are shaped - we see you.

We value you.
We need you.

Today and every day, thank you for the work that cannot always be measured, but is always felt.

Did you know Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day?

It marks the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, when a small Mexican army defeated French forces against the odds. A moment of resilience, courage, and deep national pride.

In the classroom, moments like this invite us into something deeper than celebration.

They invite us into understanding.

In a Montessori environment, we don’t reduce cultures to themes or decorations.

We study them. We respect them. We make space for children to form real connections to the people, history, and stories that shape our world.

Because when we approach cultural celebrations with intention, we’re not just teaching facts. We’re also nurturing awareness, empathy, and a sense of global belonging.

It is a beautiful responsibility - to help children see both the uniqueness and the interconnectedness of our world.

And it begins with a prepared adult.
