NomoGaia is an independent, nonprofit, human rights organization that uses both data and qualitative field-based processes to determine the positive and negative impacts corporations have on human rights. These on-the-ground assessments clarify the duties of businesses to respect human rights where they operate. Our assessments have resulted in alterations in project design, labor standards, commu

nity development programs, and other actions which have promoted human rights. Our methodologies for Human Rights Assessment and case studies are transparent and publicly available to serve as guidance for socially responsible corporations, governments, academia and civil society.

These focused on supply chain due diligence in the banana fields, operational-level grievance mechanisms in a gold mine, and regulatory strengthening in the Office of the President. Each workstream deserves its own five days of NomoGaia. We merge them here to show the multiplier effects of our work - how projects build on each other and strengthen human rights in a virtuous cycle.

Why we write academic papers - https://mailchi.mp/c7c5dd9a6bda/why-we-write-academic-papers NomoGaia’s expertise comes from 18 years of painstaking fieldwork, complemented by academic studies and engagement with peers and partners. We’ve told you about this work before.

The expertise that gets traction today is what is written in peer-reviewed academic papers. These papers shape laws and regulations explicitly governing business and human rights in Asia, Latin America and, most immediately, Europe. So we write those! And send mark to meetings!

Regulations and 'Risk' - https://mailchi.mp/b5fe5ffa2fb5/regulations-and-risk Safety experts define risks at operations based on key parameters: are there vertical ladders people fall from, are there loud machines that harm hearing? Equipment, engineering , behavioral protocols, and protective gear measurably mitigate existing risks.

There is no comparable risk identification and management program in human rights. Companies start with intrinsic risk and jump straight to ā€˜remedy.’ The remedies aren't fit for purpose and the harms persist.

Governments, international agencies, NGOs and universities have gathered to focus on ā€œAccelerating action on business and human rights amidst crises and transformations.ā€ It’s a nod to the whiplash folks in our space experience daily, as we watch companies dump their diversity, equity, health & safety and broader sustainability commitments at the same time regulators are trying to develop new binding laws.
