It's with great sadness that we have to share the news of Darren Espinoza passing on Sunday, May 26th. We are still processing this loss to our community. Darren was a navy veteran and rising senior at Regis studying Health and Exercise Science.

He was an HM2 (Hospital Corpsman) and served eight years for our country on the US Naval Ship Mercy and with the 3/8 Marines. Darren made a profound impact on the Regis community and was well-loved by all who knew him.  His loss is felt particularly hard by his family and friends and by those in the Health and Exercise Science program, the Regis MilVet circle, and the Denver Rugby community.

Please join us next Wednesday, June 12 at 3:30 p.m. as we gather in community to care for each other and to remember him.

June is PTSD awareness month.
To all veterans, we applaud your immense bravery, both on the field and in reaching out for help and support.  To all who are struggling, you do not need to carry the pain alone.  There are many options available to you. For Regis students, the Regis Center for Counseling Services is open for walk-ins and scheduled appointments this summer.  University Ministry staff are available for confidential support, conversation, and prayer. In addition, confidential support with a trained crisis counselor is available 24/7 for everyone in the U.S. by texting the National 988 Crisis Lifeline at 988 or via chat at 988lifeline.org. Military Veterans may also access the Veteran Crisis line at 988, Option 1, for support with a counselor from US Dept of Veterans Affairs.

Do you know the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day?

Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is a solemn day of remembrance for those who died in military service. Veterans Day, November 11, is a day to honor all military veterans, both living and deceased, for their service and sacrifices.

MAY IS MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH

Military Appreciation Month was introduced in Congress in 1999 by the late Sen. John McCain. The legislation was passed unanimously because leaders felt it was important to preserve and foster the honor and respect that the U.S. military deserves for vital service on behalf of the United States.

The entire month of May is designated as Military Appreciation Month, but within the month of May there are various military-themed recognition days that should not be overlooked. For example, Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Military Spouse Appreciation Day (the Friday before Mother’s Day), VE Day, and Loyalty Day are all opportunities to pause and remember the sacrifices of the nation’s fallen as well as the continued service of those in uniform and those who support them on the home front.

Regis Gives Day Starts Today!

You may not know that the Regis Military and Veterans Services office manages the Ranger Co-Op (student Pantry) on campus. Today and tomorrow we are raising funds through the Regis Gives Day Campaign to provide equitable access to our services to all students. Funds raised would help convert the entrance to the pantry to meet Colorado ADA-accessible standards by installing an automatic door control that would provide physical access to the facility from the public sidewalk to give every college student the same equal opportunity to receive our services.

With the funds from this project, we will improve the inventory management system to allow accurate estimates of food and clothing items available at any given time. Knowing the number of goods purchased, donated, and distributed helps oversight on our product performance, reduces food and funding waste and ensures adequate food and clothing needs are met.
