The Overland Expo Foundation is proud to announce the awarding of an $8,197 grant to Tread Lightly! in support of two Responsible Recreation Kiosk Installation projects taking place in Arizona and Oregon — timed to coincide with Overland Expo West and Overland Expo PNW.

As visitation to public lands continues to increase, so does the need for meaningful, on-the-ground education that helps protect the places we all love to explore.

In Arizona, this project will focus on the entrance to Forest Road 535 off State Route 89A in the Coconino National Forest near Sedona — one of the most heavily used dispersed camping and motorized recreation areas in the region. Increased traffic in recent years has led to resource damage, including impacts to sensitive meadows and illegal off-route travel. A new two-panel interpretive kiosk will provide visitors with maps, camping guidelines, area information, and Tread Lightly!’s responsible motorized use principles — delivering timely education right where it’s needed most.

In Oregon, the project will support educational and safety signage along the iconic Steens Mountain Loop Road — a nearly 59-mile scenic byway climbing to almost 10,000 feet in elevation. As one of the Pacific Northwest’s most sought-after overland routes, Steens Mountain sees growing overlap between motorized and non-motorized recreation. Thoughtful signage and education will help protect this unique high-desert ecosystem, preserve access, and ensure this extraordinary landscape remains open and accessible for generations to come.

Tread Lightly! leads a national initiative to promote responsible motorized recreation by balancing adventure with conservation. Through projects, education, and outreach, they help reduce environmental impact while protecting natural and cultural resources across the country.

We’re honored to support their mission — and proud to invest directly in protecting access to the public lands that bring our community together.

The Overland Expo Foundation is proud to announce the awarding of a $5,000 grant to for their Yes! to Adventure – Youth Outdoor Summer Program. Yes! to Adventure is a youth outdoor summer camp designed to reduce barriers to outdoor access and help children in the rural Gunnison Valley build confidence, skills, and meaningful connections with the natural world.

The Mountain Roots Food Project is a Colorado nonprofit that works to build a resilient, equitable local food system in the Gunnison Valley by connecting people, the land, and healthy food. They grow and distribute nutritious, regionally-produced food, teach farming and nutrition skills, support food access for all ages through programs like Farm to School and Backyard Harvest, and train the next generation of farmers.

Campers spend full days outside exploring trails, learning to read maps, identifying plants and wildlife, building shelters, observing weather patterns, and practicing Leave No Trace principles. Through hands-on science activities—water testing in local creeks, tracking animal signs, exploring soil and rock formations—children learn how natural systems work and why protecting them matters.

The program blends adventure with practical skills: how to prepare for rapidly changing mountain weather, how to move safely across uneven terrain, how to work as a team, and how to take care of themselves and others in outdoor environments. Many families rely on the program for safe, structured summer care; for the children, it’s often their first chance to experience hiking, creek exploration, outdoor cooking, or a day on public lands.

By combining outdoor skill-building, environmental education, and equitable access, Yes! to Adventure helps kids grow into confident young explorers who feel at home in nature and committed to caring for the landscapes that define our region.

Some of the best connections happen far beyond cell service.

Around a fire ring, beside a well-traveled rig, with mountains fading into dusk—this is where stories are shared, lessons are passed on, and friendships are strengthened. The outdoors has a way of reminding us that we’re part of something bigger than ourselves.

The Overland Expo Foundation is proud to announce the awarding of a $16,000 grant to for their Protecting Public Lands: Sanitation and Accessibility Improvements Across the Medicine Bow Routt National Forest. NFF in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), is undertaking a critical project to upgrade outdated toilet infrastructure across the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests, spanning Colorado and Wyoming.

The National Forest Foundation believes in a world where caring for forests is second nature. Their mission is to transform America’s love of nature into action for National Forests. Simply put, they are a boots-on-the-ground organization that rolls up its sleeves to implement projects at scale and deliver generational impact—leveraging private support to match public dollars.

Over 1.5 million people visit the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests each year. Current facilities pose environmental risks and limit accessibility for diverse users, including the growing overland community. With secured funding, the NFF is already upgrading pit toilets at 22 sites. However, gaps remain for an additional 30 toilets and surrounding infrastructure improvements. The new toilets are designed to last over 50 years, ensuring long-term environmental protection and improved recreation experiences.

Overland Expo Foundation funding will go directly towards the decommissioning of existing infrastructure and implementation of new toilets at 2 locations across the forest. Pines Campground, located in the Parks Ranger District, is a campground that was newly renovated to accommodate larger campers, and trailers for OHV users. Lincoln Park campground on the Brush Creek/Hayden Ranger District is the second toilet location that would benefit from this funding. This location is a campground that also serves as a jumping off point for OHV travel in almost any direction. This area is a nexus of dozens of miles of OHV trail use.
