A Cryptid-Themed Halloween Potluck Hosted by the Buckley Norse Pagan Alliance

The legends are real, and they are ready to celebrate. Step into the darkness for a Halloween night dedicated to the strange, the elusive, and the entirely unexplained. Whether you are a dedicated cryptid hunter, a curious skeptic, or a creature of the night yourself, you are summoned to our gathering.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE WOODS:

- The Great Ghost Hunt: Three elusive spirits are hiding in the shadows throughout the venue. Keep your eyes peeled- the first sharp-sighted hunters to track them down will claim first, second, and third prizes.

- Punkin’ Carving Contest: Bring your own pre-carved masterpiece from home! Whether it is a classic punkin, a ghoulish turnip, or a cursed apple, display your creation for all to see. Attendees will cast their votes, and a trophy will be awarded to the best in show.

- Scary Stories To Tell When It’s Not Light Out: Gather around the flickering candlelight as we share terrifying tales and attempt a mystical seance. If the veil is thin enough, we might just summon a mischievous little Kobold to join the party.

- Free Food and Drinks, Now With 50% Less Deadly Nightshade: Feast on spooky themed foods, freshly baked treats, and unearthly refreshments--not to mention as much candy as you can eat, of course!

We will be having a science fiction double feature: a presentation on the Hindu God of the Machines AND on the phenomena of spirit possession and spiritual sickness.

For the headliner, we will be discussing Vishvarkarma--the "All Maker" and the "God of the Machines"--as well as the evolution of the concept of the Divine Craftsman™and the ritual life of modern tools.

For the closer, we will be discussing spirit possession-- in which a spiritual entity guides or controls a person's actions--and spiritual sickness--the phenomena in which physical symptoms manifest as a result of spiritual contact.

We will be having a science fiction double feature: a presentation on the Hindu God of the Machines AND on the Native American Spirit of Cannabilism.

For the headliner, we will be discussing Vishvarkarma--the "All Maker" and the "God of the Machines"--as well as the evolution of the concept of the Divine Craftsman™and the ritual life of modern tools.

For the closer, we will be discussing the Wendigo, the horrific Algonquian cannibalism cryptid. We will be beginning spooky season proper by examining the Wendigo in its original, folkloric representations and contrasting it to depictions of Wendigos in American media and pop culture.

We conclude our presentation on the phenomena of holy madness. In particular, we will be examining case studies of this religious mania from the Norse traditions and discussing case studies of how this madness was (semi) controlled through ritual by Norse warriors called berserkers and ulfednar. We will also be getting into the different meanings of (one of) Odin's names, and how that sheds some light on how the Norse interpreted madness as a whole.

Be prepared for lengthy discussions that range from the possibly affected madness of Diogenes of Sinope (pictured below being normal and well adjusted), the orgiastic frenzies of the Dionysians, and the bursts of righteous fury exemplified by berserkers and ulfednar.

We continue our exploration of Hinduism, this time dipping a toe into the absurd world of “divine madness” (unmatta).
