Rocky Mountain Refuge for End of Life Care

Rocky Mountain Refuge for End of Life Care Our mission is to offer dignity and safety to our neighbors who are unhoused and at the end of life. Hospice is a covered benefit of Medicare/Medicaid.

We provide a comfortable environment for hospice agencies to deliver care that comes at no cost to the resident. Rocky Mountain Refuge is a specialized shelter for people who are unhoused and are at the end of life related to terminal illness. At this time, there is no other comparable facility in the Denver Metro area and few nationally. Do you know of someone who would benefit from this housing

opportunity? Please reach out via our contact page:

At least 172 people died on the street in Metro Denver in 2019 according to the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless. Our mission is to provide a safe space for our neighbors who desire such a place to die. People who are unhoused and terminally ill have few options to receive care:
• Emergency rooms and ICUs are expensive (often to the taxpayers) and not a good setting for end-of-life care.
• Hospice patients need privacy and stability that emergency shelters cannot offer. Rocky Mountain Refuge strives to offer a middle ground between utilizing ER and shelters- we have partnered with Denver Rescue Mission, where we have leased 2 rooms to support our incoming residents. Our staff and volunteers will provide companionship and non-medical care 24/7, including assistance with activities of daily life. All residents are required to have hospice services in place which offers skilled nursing, CNA services, MSW/Chaplain support, equipment and medications for end-of-life care.

Theresa passed quietly last evening. She was only with us for a couple of days and was unable to communicate very much. We pray that she finds the peace she struggled to find in life.

Today we say good bye to Damien. He was quiet and pleasant while he was with us, and his family was able to spend time with him, which is wonderful. May he rest in peace.

UCHealth has recently released a short article on the Refuge and the care needs so many face in the end of life. The unhoused often face the worst circumstances, but many are housed until their health declines beyond the point of living alone (or without the caregiving they need). Everyone deserves dignity, especially in the final days.

Rocky Mountain Refuge provides hospice care for people experiencing homelessness, offering dignity, comfort and a place to call home.

We say goodbye again to one of our residents, James. He was a sweet, peaceful soul who loved his Cowboy shows. He was able to rest and watch them as he peacefully left this world. Happy trails, James!
