Our mission is to offer dignity and safety to our neighbors who are unhoused and at the end of life. Hospice is a covered benefit of Medicare/Medicaid.

We provide a comfortable environment for hospice agencies to deliver care that comes at no cost to the resident. Rocky Mountain Refuge is a specialized shelter for people who are unhoused and are at the end of life related to terminal illness. At this time, there is no other comparable facility in the Denver Metro area and few nationally. Do you know of someone who would benefit from this housing opportunity? At least 172 people died on the street in Metro Denver in 2019 according to the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless. Our mission is to provide a safe space for our neighbors who desire such a place to die. People who are unhoused and terminally ill have few options to receive care:
• Emergency rooms and ICUs are expensive (often to the taxpayers) and not a good setting for end-of-life care.
• Hospice patients need privacy and stability that emergency shelters cannot offer. Rocky Mountain Refuge strives to offer a middle ground between utilizing ER and shelters- we have partnered with Denver Rescue Mission, where we have leased 2 rooms to support our incoming residents. Our staff and volunteers will provide companionship and non-medical care 24/7, including assistance with activities of daily life. All residents are required to have hospice services in place which offers skilled nursing, CNA services, MSW/Chaplain support, equipment and medications for end-of-life care.

Mark had a great sense of humor and was deeply loved by his older brother who will miss him a great deal. We didn't get to know him well, but we shall remember.

Our resident Scott passed this morning at the Refuge. He was a gentle soul. Scott had a good sense of humor and he liked horror movies. His hospice team and caregivers are glad his suffering did not persist and that he is now at rest. May Scott’s memory be a blessing!

Ron was very caring towards his friends and community. He built a birdhouse for his last shelter and loved potted plants, which he gave to his neighbors. His friends visited and really cared for him, we know he will be missed.

We have just learned of the passing of Danielle Renee Hutchinson last month. She came to us in the spring of 2025 and left the Refuge to spend time with her husband that summer. Renee was a kind, sweet person and a poet. We will remember her!

By time Susan arrived at the Refuge, her illness prevented her from being very talkative, but she was kind to anyone she did speak with. Susan endured much pain and distress because of her illness, but she had some clear mornings and restful times as well. We were all honored to care for her, and we are glad she is no longer suffering. Rest in peace Susan.

Lucy was with us very briefly and passed away before we could get to know her very well. She was accomplished in her life, a managing buyer at a Resort & Convention Center and seemed to have wonderful relationships with her friends. We will remember her.

Theresa passed quietly last evening. She was only with us for a couple of days and was unable to communicate very much. We pray that she finds the peace she struggled to find in life.

Jack's needs exceeded what we can care for, so his hospice took him in patient to keep him comfortable. He passed in March and we are just finding out. We will remember!

Michael passed peacefully early this morning. He was very happy to be with us and I'm glad we gave him a safe place to end his journey. Rest in Peace.
