We are so incredibly proud of Julieta Ochoa for signing her National Letter of Intent today to run cross country and track for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps while attending Scripps College in Claremont, California on a prestigious full ride scholarship! Julieta is one of our original Urban XC athletes, having started running with us as a 5th grader. She never stopped showing up, displaying incredible commitment by running 48 weeks per year for her entire high school career, en route to becoming the 3rd fastest cross country girl in Denver East High School history with an 18:15 5k personal best. She also possesses PRs of 5:13 in the 1600 and 11:22 (at altitude) in the 3200 heading into her senior track season. Julieta will be joining a squad that recently placed 3rd at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships and has established itself as one of the best Division III programs in America.

Most importantly of all, Julieta has become an inspiration and mentor to other kids of color in our program, showing that success and joy in running is possible for them too. In Julieta’s words, “If you don’t see that representation in any situation or space, you be that representation, because people like you are needed in those spaces.” We’re so proud of you, Juli! 🥹 You are what we dreamed of when we started Urban XC.

Today is National Girls and Women in Sports Day! In a time where diversity, equity and inclusion are under attack, we couldn’t be prouder of our Urban XC girls for blazing a trail and fighting to make the sport of running more diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

NXR in Mesa, Arizona! Julieta, Paola and Samantha ran against the best runners from Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico, and they all did amazing things out there! These girls have been running 5-6 days per week since June 3rd in preparation for days like today. We couldn’t be prouder of their dedication and resilience!

And a special thank you to all of our supporters! Trips like this wouldn’t be possible without your support, and we’re so grateful to our Urban XC community!

We are so grateful for , whose story was told in “McFarland USA,” for coming to speak with our Denver Urban XC community today! Thomas’ story of grit and resilience is inspiring, and is a reminder of the amazing things that can happen when we invest in our youth. Thank you, Thomas, for inspiring our kids to believe that champions can come from anywhere.

This past week, one of Urban XC’s great supporters, Jerry Buttimer, passed away after a courageous and prolonged battle with cancer. Jerry was one of Urban XC’s earliest supporters, giving words of encouragement and support as I told him about my vision for the program. Jerry was a life long lover of track and cross country, and he was eager to support our mission to make our sport more inclusive. Upon his death, Jerry’s family asked for supporters to donate to Urban XC on Jerry’s behalf, and nearly $1,000 has already been raised to support the kids in our program, with more donations coming in each day. Sending all of our love and gratitude to the Buttimer family during this time. Rest easy, Jerry, and thank you.
