B.Y. escaped dangerous conditions in East Africa and was living a productive life in the US as a lawful resident. He was taken into ICE custody earlier this year, and a CIJF-funded attorney agreed to take his case.

While in detention, ICE moved B.Y. to a detention center in Arizona in preparation for being deported to Uganda - which is not B.Y.’s country of origin (third-country deportation).

Our attorney partner intervened and prevented the deportation. Several weeks later, B.Y. was set free via a habeas petition.

Z.Q. spent 5-years as a direct employee of U.S. special forces in Afghanistan, followed by 10-years in full-time counter-terrorism work for the now lost Republic. He came to the U.S. armed with nothing but letters of recommendation, a lengthy and sterling record of service, and the belief that America remained his closest ally.

Z.Q. came expecting help for his family. He did not expect a handout, but to be welcomed as a friend and comrade. He got nearly a year in ICE detention instead.

A CIJF-funded attorney won Z.Q.'s case--but ICE wouldn't let him go. It took another 5-months of work and the 10th circuit court of appeals to secure his freedom and future.

Dani wins his freedom!

As a small child, “Dani” came to the United States with his family from Mexico. As a teenager, he became a DACA recipient, allowing him to stay in the country to live and work. As a young man, he was mistakenly arrested by ICE and detained in Aurora, Colorado.

CIJF hired an attorney to submit a habeas petition on Dani’s behalf. The petition was eventually granted, and Dani was released and reunited with his family.

After his release, Dani’s mother emailed our team to say, “Thank you for visiting him, for believing in him, for fighting for him, and for walking beside our family. What you have done for us will stay in my heart forever. I will never forget it.”

Earlier this year, Yofran was arrested by ICE and placed in detention - separated from his wife and three children.

With the help of an immigration attorney and an attorney with expertise in habeas law, Yofran was released from detention last month. Afterwards his friends and church family hosted a festive barbecue in his honor.

I had the good fortune to attend the barbecue, where Yofran and his wife emphatically asked me to thank CIJF donors for their support. So on behalf of Yofran’s family, thank you!!

Luisa fled life-threatening conditions in her Latin American home country, and was detained in Texas and then Aurora, Colorado.

A CIJF-funded attorney helped her win asylum last March, but DHS appealed the decision, forcing Luisa to remain in detention.

A CIJF partner-attorney filed a habeas petition on Luisa’s behalf that resulted in a bond hearing. Her original CIJF attorney represented Luisa at the bond hearing, where she was granted bond and finally released.

Luisa’s freedom was made possible by our generous donors, who we cannot thank enough!

On May 30, amateur boxers raised money on behalf of their favorite charities.

Jorge Gonzalez-Soria put on the gloves to fight for CIJF. He not only convincingly won the fight, he also raised over $1,600 for CIJF.
