Cottonwood Institute’s (CI) mission is to connect middle and high school students to the outdoors and inspire them to become leaders, problem-solvers, and changemakers in their communities. CI collaborates with schools and youth organizations to provide high quality, high impact environmental education and service-learning programs. CI programs empower students to ignite change, not just talk abou

t it. Cottonwood Institute’s change theory is: Gift + Issue = Change. Every student has a gift and when they apply it to an issue they are passionate about, they will change themselves. That change will ripple out to their friends and family; their schools and communities; the environment; and the world.

Join us for a special reception on Wednesday, June 17th, 2026 from 2-4pm to see local Denver artist Mike Wilson's 14er watercolor art displayed at the Colorado State Capitol Building in celebration of Colorado's 150th Anniversary!

Mike painted all 53 peaks and so graciously donated the artwork to Cottonwood Institute to support our mission of breaking down barriers and providing more children with the opportunity to experience the outdoors.

If you are interested in purchasing these prints to help fund The Cottonwood Institute, please follow this link: https://ow.ly/ynY050YTGvb

Thank you to Sammy Nigh, Sensaria Decor and Great Big Canvas for your help making this exhibit possible!

We had a ribbiting time fishing and exploring the ponds at St. Vrain State Park!

Not only did we see ospreys, pelicans, and great blue herons, but AXL Academy middle schoolers also found a frog during our macroinvertebrates lesson.

They watched and waited patiently for the frog to hop into their bucket and then gently released it back into the water afterwards.

“I’m on top of the woooooorld!” one student exclaimed after climbing up a large hill and admiring the vast view from atop.

In between games, Angevine middle schoolers whittled and whittled and whittled away.
