Preservation is not about holding on to the past.

It is about making sure it still has a place in the future.

During Preservation Month, celebrate the historic sites, neighborhoods, and landmarks that tell the full American story—places that remind us of how far we've come and how far we still have to go.

Over the past few months, the Delaware in Conversation series has created space to look more closely at the stories that shape this place.

On Wednesday, June 10 at 6:30 p.m., the series concludes at the Delaware City Library with The Delaware Poison Candy Murders of 1898.

Presented by historian Margaret Opsata, the program explores a late-19th-century case and what it reveals about life in Delaware at that time.

This free event is open to the public, with snacks provided.

Each June, the community takes time to come together, reflect, and recognize a history that continues to shape the present.

On June 19, the day will include a commemorative service at the African Union Church Cemetery, along with a Black-Owned Business and Organizations Expo and an evening performance from Best Kept Soul.

It’s a full day across Delaware City, with opportunities to learn, gather, and take part.

To explore all activities, visit: juneteenth-delcity.org

If you did not attend the previous planning meetings, please RSVP at [email protected] to receive Zoom Meeting information.

Fort DuPont was built for service, and over time, thousands of people passed through here carrying that responsibility.

Some returned home. Some did not.

This is not just part of a long weekend.

It is a day set aside to remember those who lost their lives in service to their country.

In places like this, that history feels closer.

Learning doesn’t always look the same.

This month, kids ages 7 to 11 can take part in a hands-on cooking program at the Delaware City Library, making cornbread and Juneteenth fizzy lemonade while learning practical skills along the way.

Supplies are limited, and registration is required.

Some evenings feel worth planning around.

On May 22, Fort Folk Fest returns with live music from Tal Naccarato from 7:00 to 9:00 PM

Bring a chair, find a spot, and stay for a while.

Fort DuPont began as a coastal defense site.

On Saturday, May 23 at 6 p.m., a guided Battery Hike will explore how that system worked and why this location mattered.

The program looks at both the history and the landscape that supported it.

Wear waterproof shoes. Some areas may be muddy.

The program is free! To register, please call 302-601-6382, or email Jake at [email protected].

Some places are preserved.
Others are forgotten.

Fort DuPont is still here because people chose to take care of it.

Historic preservation starts with that decision.

Fort DuPont is one of many places still telling its story.

Across the country, historic sites are being preserved for the same reason. They matter.

Before the season picks up, there’s a lot that has to happen.

Grounds are cleared. Trails are checked. Spaces that sat quiet through winter are brought back into use.

Most of it goes unnoticed.

But it’s part of what makes this place work.
