We are a volunteer organization responsible for building, maintaining, and promoting 45.9 miles of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail between the Monches and Stony Creek Segments in Waukesha County.

Scuppernong Reroute is done!!

After over almost three years of planning and 18 months of volunteer work, the Waukesha/ Milwaukee County Chapter volunteers completed a 3/4 mile reroute in the mid Scuppernong Segment last week. This reroute eliminated very steep slopes that were hard to maintain and eroding badly. This project also created a more sustainable and interesting route that better takes in the glacial topography.

The route was laid out by Alliance staff, consulting with DNR staff and local volunteers. The decision was made that Chapter volunteers had the skills to complete this huge project "in house". Six huge Chapter Workdays and dozens of Monday Mudder and Blazing Babe workdays sculpting sustainable trail on some of the most dynamic landscape in Southern Kettle Moraine tested all of our Chapter's skill and resilience.

The Chapter has committed to ongoing invasive vegetation removal that will further enhance the dynamic views. A unique 360 degree bench, designed by Lee Taylor, highlights the view of what we call Fern Valley and is bound to be a destination for many hikers. A short rock retaining wall will be installed in the next few weeks, but the classic Southern Kettle Moraine trail is completed, signed and open for business.

The reroute is located mostly north of Mackie Picnic Area in the Scuppernong Segment. Best Parking would be at Scuppernong Trails Area on Hwy ZZ and hiking east, then north, or starting at Pinewoods Group Campground and hiking south.

On a personal note from our leader for this trail reroute, Pat Witkowski said, "I really want to thank the Ice Age Trail Alliance staff for entrusting our Chapter with this project and the literally hundreds of volunteers, but especially the 'go to' volunteers from the Waukesha/Milwaukee County Chapter who kept coming back to join me in this incredible project that will provide a dynamic, yet comfortable hiking experience for years and years to come.
