Many things can stand between you and your educational goals—whether it’s food or housing insecurity, busy schedules, or managing mental health. The Powell County Literacy Program is here to help remove those obstacles.
In our office, we offer practical support to keep you moving forward:

HiSET Exam Sponsorship: Financial assistance to cover your test fees.

Food Support: Access to our in-office food closet, plus our Community Food Drive on October 22nd at Mount Powell Tap Room (donations can also be dropped off at Kat’s office anytime).

Transportation: Help arranging transportation to HiSet testing facility in Butte. This can be done via gas vouchers or scheduling a bus with the Powell County Council on Aging.

Local Resources: Help finding connections to community assistance ranging from Butte Career Services, Action Inc, Ability, End Overdose, Radiance Counseling, SWMT Veterans Food Pantry, and more

With all of that being stated I also would like to highlight a free resource available thanks to Southwest Montana NAMI. Build connections and remove some of the road blocks keeping you from your goals. Kat will have business cards for NAMI and more on the desk outside her office! There is also bulletins and flyers on the doors as well. Even when Kat is not in office please feel free to pop by and get the information for services you might need.

In addition to all the support, there are the business cards of local/MT businesses that have supported us, scholarships, military recruitment information, and more!

$1,000 recurring scholarship open to high school seniors and college students.

🔹Open to any current high school senior, college student, or graduate student
🔹Must be a legal resident of the United States
🔹Enrolled in a two- to five-year post-secondary institution for the Fall 2027 semester.
🔹Should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher and be in good academic standing.

BEHIND THE MISSION — PART 5: I'm Not Quitting. I'm Asking for Help.

Jay and I aren't going to be here forever.

We've spent years building something we genuinely believe matters.

Our Pantry is more than groceries. It's a place where veterans can find dignity, support, connection, and people who care.

And we want it to continue long after we're no longer the ones doing the work.

But passion alone won't sustain it.

A mission cannot survive indefinitely on the sacrifices of just a handful of people.

We need volunteers who show up consistently. People willing to take responsibility and follow through. Financial supporters. Fundraising help. New ideas. Community members willing to become part of something bigger than themselves.

I'm still here. I'm still working. I'm still writing grants, finding resources, making plans, and doing everything I can for our veterans.

I'm NOT stepping away.

But I cannot do everything. Neither can Jay.

Our motto is "Giving a Hand Up, Not a Hand Out."

We've spent years extending our hands to help others.

Right now, we could really use a few more hands reaching back to help us.

We're planning a Food Bank Drive at Mount Powell Tap Room on Thursday, Oct. 22nd. Come by to drop off non-perishable food items, grab a drink, and support two great places at once!

💰 VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship

$1,000 to $35,000 in scholarships are awarded each year to high school students (or equivalent) interested in democracy.

🔹 Must be enrolled in a public, private, or parochial high school or home study program in the United States.
🔹 U.S. citizenship is not required; students must be lawful U.S. permanent residents or have applied for permanent residence.

Every fall, lawyers and judges from across the state lend their time and talent to empower Montanans with helpful legal knowledge and resources through the State Bar's nationally recognized Citizens' Law School Program. This free program, produced by the Law-Related Education Committee, is designed to bridge the gap between the legal profession and the public, fostering a better understanding of the law and promoting civic engagement.

The October 7th session will be in-person, hosted by Carroll College, with Zoom option available.
