Wood Storks in Georgia

Great news—Wood Storks are back at McDuffie PFA! A special thanks to our volunteer birder, Mr. Bill Loper, who spotted them today.

These tall, white wading birds with dark, featherless heads are seasonal visitors to our region. Each year, they move across the Southeast in response to changing water levels and food availability. While many nest along the coast, they often travel inland during the warmer months in search of ideal feeding conditions in wetlands like ours.

Wood Storks use a unique feeding method called “tactile feeding.” They slowly sweep their open bills through shallow water and snap them shut the instant they detect prey. This strategy works best when water levels are just right—one reason healthy, well-managed wetlands are so important.

In Georgia, Wood Storks typically begin arriving in late spring and can be seen through summer as they follow shifting water conditions.

Once listed as endangered, Wood Storks have made an encouraging comeback thanks to habitat protection and restoration. Even so, they still depend on clean, functioning wetlands to thrive.

If you visit McDuffie PFA, help protect these remarkable birds:
• Stay on designated trails
• Give wildlife plenty of space
• Help keep wetlands clean

Healthy wetlands support Wood Storks—and countless other species.
