Taking Sportfish Science to the Pacific!
We’re excited to announce a new partnership with the Guy Harvey Foundation!
Together, with Harte Research Institute and Guy Harvey Foundation we'll be taking our research beyond the Gulf and into the Eastern Tropical Pacific, as we begin tagging billfish in Panama, based out of the world-famous Tropic Star Lodge in Piñas Bay!
Our collaboration will focus on deploying satellite, acoustic, and conventional tags on Blue Marlin and Sailfish to better understand their movements, habitat use, and connectivity across the eastern Pacific and beyond. Billfish are highly migratory apex predators, and tracking where they go—and when—provides critical insight into how these species use offshore and coastal habitats, interact with fisheries, and respond to environmental conditions.
By combining the Sportfish Center’s tagging and fisheries science expertise with the Guy Harvey Foundation’s long-standing commitment to billfish conservation, this partnership will help generate data that directly supports science-based management and international conservation efforts.
This partnership marks a major step forward in advancing our science on a global scale. Stay tuned as our science team heads south this month to start tagging!
