FSG-Guy Harvey Fellow Gina Clementi reels in sharks in Western Dry Rocks to examine how they interact with fish spawning aggregations in her latest research blog.

"Just because the sharks are present does not mean they are actively preying upon these spawning fish. For that, we turn to an unexpected source of information: shark p**p."

This past weekend, 139 educators gathered at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay to take part in the second ever Ecosystem Restoration with CCA Guy Harvey Conservation Education Training. Made possible by the generous support of Busch Gardens and sponsorship from Coastal Conservation Association Florida (CCA Florida), this training featured mangrove and cordgrass restoration lessons as well as clam dissection and vertical oyster gardens. Educators learned about CCA Florida’s restoration efforts in the state and how they can get their students involved. Thank you to Busch Gardens and CCA Florida for an incredible training! We can’t wait for the next Ecosystem Restoration with CCA training next year!

This , we’re celebrating the world’s largest fish, and one very special shark that’s made history.

Meet Milo, first tagged off the Yucatan Peninsula in 2017, he’s returned to the annual whale shark aggregation year after year. Just a few weeks ago, researcher Rafael de la Parra tagged him for a 5th time, allowing scientists to follow this marine species for the longest time ever, with over 34,000 miles logged across the Gulf, Caribbean, and all the way north to Massachusetts and Bermuda.

Long-term tracks like this help scientists understand migration patterns and habitat use, data that’s critical to protecting this magnificent species.

Meet the coral reef gardener, the Hawksbill Sea Turtle. The Hawksbill’s narrow, beak-like mouth lets it reach sponges tucked deep in reef crevices. By grazing them back, Hawksbills help keep reefs healthy.

Did you know Coral reefs are basically underwater cities? Built by thousands of tiny animals, reefs create the shelter and structure that roughly 25% of all marine species depend on, despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor.
