City Charter or Charter School?
There seems to be some confusion about the charter revision questions on Danbury’s November 3 ballot, so let’s clear it up!

A CITY CHARTER IS NOT A CHARTER SCHOOL!

A city charter is the document that establishes how our city government operates. Revising the city charter means updating the rules and structure of local government. This vote is NOT about creating a charter school. Those are two completely different things!

SO WHAT ARE WE ACTUALLY VOTING ON?
There are TWO separate charter revision questions on the ballot:
Question 1: Four-year terms and Board of Education elections. This proposal would extend the terms of municipal elected officials to four years and eliminate staggered terms for Board of Education members.
Question 2: Other city charter revisions. This covers the remaining proposed changes, including updates to ethics, financial transparency, budgeting, borrowing authority, and how city government operates.
IMPORTANT: THESE ARE TWO SEPARATE VOTES!
Voters can vote on each question independently. You can support one proposal and oppose the other. They address different parts of the proposed charter changes.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER TO EDUCATORS?
How our city government operates matters to our schools, our students, and our community. As educators and union members, it's important that we understand what is actually on the ballot rather than confuse city charter revision with supporting charter schools.
SO, WHERE DOES NEA DANBURY STAND?
NEA Danbury supports giving Danbury residents the opportunity to vote on the proposed city charter revisions. Supporting the opportunity for voters to decide is not the same as endorsing every proposed change.

And let's be absolutely clear: we remain vehemently opposed to a Danbury charter school. However, that issue is NOT what you are voting on. We want our members to have accurate information and understand the issues before they vote.

Happy World Teachers’ Day to the incredible educators who change lives every single day!

I’m a proud product of Danbury Public Schools, and I’ll never forget walking into King Street Primary as a second grader who couldn’t speak a word of English. From that moment on, teachers began pouring into that little boy, teaching me, encouraging me, believing in me, and helping shape the person I would become.

If I’ve accomplished anything in this life, it’s because teachers were there along the way helping me see what was possible.

To every educator with NEA-Danbury who shows up, gives their heart, and believes in our kids: “thank you” will never be enough. What you do matters. And you are changing the world, one student at a time.

NEA Danbury celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month at Puerto Vallarta Restaurant. We had an incredible time coming together to honor the rich cultures, vibrant histories, and contributions of the Hispanic communities. From amazing food to shared stories, it was a true celebration of community and diversity! Huge thanks to our organizer, Luanelly Iglesias for putting the event together and to all our members who brought such great energy. Let us know in the comments how you celebrate this month?
