October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and there is an important connection between domestic violence and homelessness that deserves more attention.

For someone experiencing abuse, leaving home may mean leaving behind their housing, financial security, belongings, and support system all at once. Finding somewhere safe to go can become one of the biggest barriers to leaving an unsafe situation.

In a single 24-hour period in 2025, domestic violence programs across the country received 13,018 requests for help that they were unable to meet due to a lack of resources. 58% of those unmet requests were for shelter and housing. (NNEDV)

Housing is more than having a roof overhead. For women and children rebuilding after crisis, a safe and stable home can provide the foundation needed to begin moving forward.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we’re raising awareness of the connection between housing insecurity and domestic violence, and the importance of making safe housing and long-term support accessible to those who need it.

Road to Home at Amos House provides transitional housing and supportive services for women and children in the Greater Danbury, Connecticut area, helping families move from housing insecurity toward greater stability and independence.
