🎉 Join Us in Celebrating Our Amazing Volunteers! 🎉

We’re thrilled to honor Detective Michael Velino, recipient of the prestigious William H. Spurgeon III Award—the highest recognition for outstanding leadership and service in the Exploring program! 🏅

Michael’s Scouting journey began as a youth, where he spent 10 years actively involved and earned the rank of Eagle Scout with Troop 1 Warwick. Today, he continues to make a lasting impact through multiple leadership roles:
✅ Assistant Den Leader & Treasurer – Pack 6 Cranston
✅ Senior Advisor & Committee Chairman – Woonsocket Police Explorers Post 412
✅ Director – Rhode Island Police Explorer Academy
✅ Committee Chairman – Troop 66 Garden City

Michael was instrumental in launching the Woonsocket Police Explorers program, which has helped countless youth gain hands-on experience in law enforcement—five of whom have gone on to become police officers! His dedication reflects a lifelong commitment to Scouting, rooted in a family tradition spanning three generations.

Westport’s Recruit Call Firefighters, Nick Datello, Austin Mackay, Brady Arrington, and Skylah Vaillancourt (pictured L-R) began the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy Call/Vol Recruit program this week at their facility in Bridgewater.

Over the next six months the recruits will engage in a wide variety of fire service training and education, both in the classroom and in the training yard. The skills they learn will prepare them to join the ranks of the Westport Fire Department and provide them with the foundation they need as they work towards their goals of being career firefighters and EMS providers.

As recent graduates of the Westport Junior Fire Explorer Program, we know that they are well prepared for whatever challenges the academy presents and we are confident that they will successfully complete this intense training program.

We wish them well.
