Alcorn County 4-H Head, Heart, Hands and Health!

08/26/2026

Today we mourn the loss of an American icon, a beloved philanthropist and a proud 4-H alumna, Dolly Parton. Her extraordinary life was defined not only by her incredible talent, but by her unwavering generosity, compassion and commitment to helping others.

For generations of young people, Dolly embodied what it means to use your gifts in service of others. From her roots in 4-H to her lifelong investment in literacy, education and community, she showed us that true leadership is grounded in humility, kindness, and purpose. As Dolly once said, "storms make trees take deeper roots." 💚

A proud 4-H alumna, she reminded us that challenges can strengthen us and help us grow. That wisdom will continue to inspire young people and communities for generations to come. We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and the millions whose lives she touched. Her legacy of hope, generosity, and service will live on. 🍀

🍀Never heard of a peanut doll? Well, that's just what Life Skills 4-H Club members sewed during their recent meeting. Not only did they learn a skill for life but will later use these dolls as a service project. Sewing teaches youth patience, problem-solving skills, spatial reasoning, and practical hand-eye coordination, which are skills that can be used in other areas of life.
🍀4-H Livestock Club members began developing a livestock and farm management plan by completing self-assessments and reflecting on their personal values and vision for the future. These activities encourage youth to develop critical-thinking skills, self-awareness, and the ability to make informed decisions. These are essential skills for entrepreneurs—skills that are particularly valuable in agriculture, where many farmers and agricultural professionals operate their own businesses and make daily management decisions.

Alcorn County 4-H was excited to be part of the recent Village of Resources, hosted by Strategic Solutions for Families at Tate Baptist Church in Corinth on August 20. The event provided a wonderful opportunity to connect with local families and showcase the many opportunities available through 4-H.
4-H hosted both an informational booth and an interactive session. At the booth, families could learn more about 4-H programs, activities, and opportunities for youth. During the session, children and families participated in a hands-on STEM activity that could easily be recreated at home. The goal was to demonstrate how families can use low- to no-cost resources to create educational, engaging, and fun learning experiences together.
We are grateful for the opportunity to connect with families in our community and look forward to participating in more community engagement opportunities in the future!
A special thank you to Mrs. Dianne Timbes, Alcorn County 4-H Advisory Council member, for managing the 4-H booth while Dr. Sims led the interactive sessions. We appreciate your support and dedication to Alcorn County 4-H!

If you are interested in your child(ren) joining 4-H, please call the Extension office at 662-286-7756 or email [email protected].

Cloverbuds and Slingshot had great club meetings this week.
🍀Cloverbuds, ages 5-7, built baskets using LEGOs to carry their pipe cleaner person down the zipline. The idea was to see which was the fastest and stayed intact. The second activity was creating mazes and allowing their peers to test them out. They had a great time problem-solving and creating!
🍀Slingshot participants have recently been practicing the official courses for the upcoming state competition. Our participants are getting more accurate with each practice.

The final leadership training for the 2026 Alcorn County 4-H Ambassadors this past Saturday. They learned basics of Parliamentary Procedure, what a leader is and is not, and professional etiquette. Ambassadors played educational games to help them learn the concepts and completed charts with what they believe a leader is and is not. We talked about how a leader is a person with influence, and a good leader is one with a positive influence on those he or she leads. They completed a self-assessment to discover how self-disciplined they are and discussed the importance of being disciplined as a leader. We ended with a blind-fold game to learn about trust and communication.
It's been a great year so far with expectation of ending the year well with a few final duties!
If any currently enrolled 4-Her is interested in becoming a county ambassador, applications can be picked up at the Extension office. Applications are due September 1.
