Thanks to all of you who called or wrote your Members of Congress in support of Grand Staircase-Escalente National Monument, Sen. Mike Lee's effort to use the Congressional Review Act (or CRA) to eliminate the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Management Plan has FAILED!

The Monument Management Plan implements National Monument protections across 1.87 million acres of federal public lands in southern Utah's spectacular redrocks country. The Monument was established in 2000 under President Clinton, and anti-environmental politicians have been trying to get rid of its protections ever since. WWP joined a handful of conservation groups to challenge the first Trump administration's bid to cur the Monument's protected acreage in half, and in response President Biden restored the original boundaries. We are now in court defending against a lawsuit by the State of Utah and local county governments to delete this national treasure from the map.

Thanks to all of our WWP members and supporters who wrote your congressional representatives asking them to oppose this raid on protected public lands! And thanks to every Member of Congress who signaled their opposition to Mike Lee's CRA bid. The clock has now run out on the CRA for the Monument Management Plan.

There is little doubt that there will be additional attacks on this conservation landscape, and WWP stands ready to defend it.

Happy Birthday to Big Bend National Park!

For 82 years, this incredible landscape has protected some of the most spectacular desert, mountain, and river habitats in North America. Big Bend provides vital refuge for a remarkable diversity of wildlife, including black bears, pumas, migratory birds, and even wolves historically.

The park’s connection to surrounding wild lands on both sides of the Rio Grande is essential for wildlife movement, genetic diversity, and long-term ecosystem health. That’s why proposals to expand border wall infrastructure in and around this region are so concerning. Walls and associated development can fragment habitat, block wildlife migration corridors, and disrupt the natural connections that species depend on to survive.

As we celebrate Big Bend’s 82nd birthday, we also celebrate the importance of keeping this landscape wild, connected, and accessible for wildlife for generations to come.
