Michigan's maritime industry runs on more than just beautiful waterfront views. (Although we've got plenty of those.) 🌊

Behind the ships, ports, and bustling waterways are hardworking people who keep everything moving. And making sure the next generation has the skills to do the same is kind of a big deal.

That's why Michigan's latest $8 million in maritime funding is worth talking about!

⚓ More than $3 million has been awarded to five Michigan community colleges to expand training for maritime, shipbuilding, and advanced manufacturing careers.

⚓ Another $5 million is available for commercial port improvements across the state.

Because let's face it, ships don't build themselves, and our ports aren't going to maintain themselves either.

It's an investment in the people and infrastructure that keep Michigan's maritime industry moving. And we're glad to see it!

Not every creature in the Great Lakes deserves a fan club. Sea lampreys are a pretty good example. 👀

These invasive parasites attach themselves to fish and feed on their blood. So you can imagine we're not too upset to hear that adult sea lamprey numbers dropped in four of the five Great Lakes in 2026!

Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Ontario all saw declines. Lake Erie had a slight increase, but its three-year average remains below the management target.

We're not declaring victory just yet. There's still work to be done, especially in Superior, Michigan, and Huron, where three-year averages remain above target.

But thanks to the Great Lakes Fishery Commission and its partners, we're making progress toward keeping these unwanted visitors in check.

Fewer sea lampreys and a better future for our Great Lakes fish? We're all for it. 🐟
