We wanted to take some time to acknowledge that this week is Black Maternal Mental Health Week and reflect on how we've evolved as an organization.
In our first year of supporting this Community, we had the pleasure of being connected with Journey. She was a beautiful person inside and out and her spirit was something to be admired. When her daughter, Harmoni, decided to make her appearance she didn't waste time.
No time for a ride to the hospital, no time for the ambulance to arrive.
Harmoni was delivered by a woman who found her power and bore her child right there on the lawn into the hands of her doula who never left her side. It was an incredible moment of strength and beauty and one we will never forget.
But then came after...
Journey left this world with her babies 3 months later. She left it a little darker, a little colder and a lot less bright without her and her beautiful children.
There were signs that the transition was hard, but as a brand new organization we didn't have the infrastructure, tools or experience that we do now to truly see the red flags. That was a huge eye opener for us so we took the necessary steps to make a change.
We now have action plans, referral sources and since then, our Founder has created the Perinatal Healing & Reflection Tool to ensure all perinatal health workers have the experience and ability to support those on their healing Journey.
Please take today to check on those around you, especially new parents as we never know the true depth they may be drowning in.
May you rest easy together Journey, Jalani and Harmoni.
*Black maternal mental health is an urgent public health issue. While Black women are not biologically more likely to develop Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs), they experience greater exposure to risk factors—including chronic stress, racism, discrimination, inadequate access to culturally responsive care, and higher rates of traumatic birth experiences—which contribute to poorer maternal mental health outcomes. They are also less likely to receive an accurate diagnosis and timely treatment*
