The future of our wild horses is grim. There is a concerted effort now to clear public lands.
Dave Phillips in the New York Times explains the plan:

A legal loophole allows the government to sell mustangs on the cheap, stripping them of protections and clearing their path to destruction.

Many of you have mentioned seeing the recent BLM announcement on Facebook regarding a horse removal in the Pryor herd.

TCF is on top of it!

We are closely following the BLM process through each phase, taking the prescribed actions available to the public to challenge their proposed actions.
TCF is adhering to the required NEPA policy by submitting “Notices of Appeal for the BLM Decision Records," which were recently released by the Billings BLM office. We will keep you updated as the status unfolds.

There is not a comment period in this process. However if you have previously submitted comments regarding this BLM Removal Plan, you can submit your own appeal to the BLM before Sept. 9.

TCF friend Liz Lumsden was on the mountain last weekend, and she said all the horses were hiding in the trees—from the intense smoke from the Washington fires and intense heat of the high 90’s!

She got lucky when Mato Ska briefly stepped out of the trees, and then went right back in.

Patriot’s band was the only other band she saw coming out of the trees and here are Beulah and Patriot headed to water.

What does a mountain lion sound like? Would you know if it were in the area while you were hiking? We have heard this while hiking along a valley floor.

Sometimes we all need a little “Morning Zen.”
Born last September, Morning Zen is the lookalike daughter of her mother Morning Reverie. The name tradition goes back one more generation to Reverie’s father, the iconic stallion Morning Star.
Zen’s Father is Oro, whom we first met the morning after his birth. We watched Oro slipping and sliding across the snow field above the snowfed pond on his newborn, wobbly legs.

Chad Hanson, college professor in Casper, WY has a broad experience and knowledge experience and knowledge of WY wild horses. Wyoming PBS produced this excellent episode with Chad to discuss his recent book, “Wild Horse Effect.”
He explains the mental health benefits with our wild horses experiences and tells us where to find the wild horses in central WY, south of the Pryor Mtns.
