🐈75% of kittens born outdoors die or disappear before the age of 6 months.

🐈 Kittens come from other kittens. Males and females can reach sexual maturity and start mating at only 4 months of age.

🐈 Kittens come from sick cats. Diseases can be passed along from mother to kitten.

🐈 Kittens come from "free kittens" who never got sterilized.

🐈 Kittens come from outdoor cats, 85% of them. That means 15% come from indoor pets.

🐈 Kittens come from low-income areas where people don't realize there may be resources to help.

🐈 Kittens come from unaltered cats and kittens who are rehomed.

🐈 Kittens come from cats who are left behind when their owner moves.

🐈 Kittens come from cats that breed within their own families causing genetic disorders, deformities and illnesses.

🐈 Kittens come from mother cats who have had litter after litter after litter. After so many litters, the health of the kittens are usually compromised.

Some sad news this morning. The brown tabby boy crossed the rainbow bridge. He continued to decline from the infection even with life saving efforts. An xray this morning showed a shattered pelvis and knee along with internal damage. The decision to let him go peacefully was made. TNR allowed him a chance, and a peaceful death instead of dying alone outside. He knew love and was relived from pain. Sleep well little one.

The power of partnerships! Tuesday night we trapped 2 kitties for TNR via the HSPPR Colorado Springs Community Cats program. No big deal right? Wrong. TNR not only helps keep our feral community populations low but it helps cats in medical need. One of our two kitties was a stray that showed up in the rural neighborhood roughly 2 weeks prior, after trapping we realized not only was he friendly but he was also very injured on his back.
We brought him into HSPPR for TNR on Tuesday and their team recognized how friendly he was and how severe his injury was. With no owner coming forward I relinquished him to the HSPPR team and they jumped into action to save his life.
From their team this morning:
"Hey he's doing ok. The infection was really bad. We had to cut open some of his skin to let all the puss come out.
He did well over night which is a really good sign.
He's hospitalized with us for the time being. He was so chill when we were doing stuff. We couldn't sedate him cause he was so dehydrated so we could only numb the area. He just sat in his big bed and let us do what ever we needed to. We didn't even have to scruff him. He just let us help him.
He's very sweet"

TNR saved this sweet kitties life, the fight wound on his back from a bite was on the verge of turning necrotic which would have caused death, once healed he will go up for adoption via HSPPR. Thanks to partnerships between rescues this kitty will live to see a much better life!

This is why we TNR cats... they are natural predators to the problem pests that can overrun cities and rural areas alike. The cat can and will keep those pests at bay and under control. More cities need to embrace what Chicago is doing to keep feral cats working for the environment.

Chicago is fighting its rat problem in a surprisingly effective way with the help of feral cats! 🐱🐾

Thanks to the "Cats at Work" program, over 1,000 feral cats have been strategically placed around the city to deter rats from taking over urban spaces. These cats, though not always interested in actively hunting the rodents, use their presence and scent to keep rats at bay, making them an essential part of Chicago’s rodent control efforts.

This creative solution highlights the power of nature’s own hunters to bring about positive change, while also giving feral cats a meaningful purpose. Let’s continue to support programs that use compassionate methods to solve urban challenges, helping both animals and people coexist in harmony! 💖🐾
