When international volunteers arrive in Vietnam, the question is often:

“What do the Vietnamese need?”

REI approaches that question differently.

Before we decide how someone can serve, we listen to our Vietnamese partners. We learn what they want to learn, where their needs are and how we can bring different strengths to the same table.

There’s a Vietnamese expression for this:

Kết nối từ tâm - connection from the heart.

It speaks to something deeper than professional collaboration. It’s about sincerity, respect, consistency and the trust that develops when people take the time to truly know one another.

And sometimes, that trust begins before the agenda does.

One of REI's distinct programs is our Exchange Fellowship program, allowing us to partner with the U.S. State Department in providing J-1 visas for nationals from REI countries to come to the U.S. for professional training and cultural exchange.

Since 1994, REI has received 139 exchange fellows, primarily from Vietnam. These are professionals coming from a variety of fields including medicine, business and agriculture.
