What should the future of Colorado Springs’ parks and trails look like?

MedWheel has weighed in on the 2026 Parks System Master Plan—and there’s a lot to be encouraged about, along with some important gaps we believe need to be addressed.

From volunteer trail maintenance and eMTB access to a world-class bike park, trail planning, and managing growing visitation, we’ve outlined seven specific requests for the future of our parks and trails.

We’re invested in getting this right—and we want to be part of the work ahead.

The Trails Heal Us. We Heal the Trails.

Join us for Trail Love in Stratton at the La Veta trailhead to clear the corridor - improving safety and enjoyment for all users.

We’ll be using hand tools to clear corridor, to improve sightlines and therefore safety and enjoyment for all trail users.

Closed toed shoes, long pants and sleeves recommended. Prepare for Colorado weather. Bring water and snacks.

No experience required: All Welcome.

We will lay out and sort our tools, perform inventory, sand and paint as necessary, sharpen and repair.

BUILD NEW TRAIL in Manitou's newest open space, next to Garden of the Gods
Black Canyon Open Space: Approved and Underway
BCOS is an exciting new property below Black Canyon Quarry, next to Cedar Heights. This new property boasts great vews, future connections to the city of CS's property in the reclaimed quarry, and multi-use trails.
What's the work?
Working with Manitou's Open Space Advisory Committee, MedWheel will be constructing new trail to connect into this space.
Closed toed shoes, long pants and long sleeves, snacks and a water bottle highly recommended. Prepare for any Colorado weather. Sign up today!

The top of Lion Trail (west side of the Hogback in Red Rock Canyon Open Space) has finally gotten a repair, completed by City Parks staff.
This section has a long history. The lower half of Lion Trail came out of years of real collaboration between MedWheel and the city. The top was built differently, has never drained well, and for years we and our partners have asked the city to collaborate on an improved design, not just the drainage.
Parks staff have completed the work, using a skid loader for drainage and rock placement to discourage cutting the trail. This is a good start but does not address the design issues with the trail.

Forest Lakes Connector: Approved and Underway

Years in the making, and now it's real. The Forest Service has approved FL7, the connector linking Forest Lakes to the Monument Trail below Mt. Herman.

The first work is the quiet kind — hiking the corridor by hand, moving brush, opening the line so everything after it becomes possible. No experience needed.

It happens to fall on National Public Lands Day, which feels just right for this project. Come spend it out here with us and join us after for a beverage at Routes Outfitter and Trails End Tavern in Monument!

Trails stay open because people show up for them.
This weekend we joined Friends of Cheyenne Mountain State Park to clear the corridor on the Dixon Trail and the Mountain Loop — cutting back overgrowth, opening sightlines, giving these trails room to breathe.
On Saturday, runners in the Cheyenne Mountain Run 25km were among the first to move through the cleared corridor. Most of them will never know how much brush came out to make that possible. That's often how this work goes.
Thank you to Friends of CMSP for the invitation, and to everyone who spent a morning out there.
